Gangsters attack and rob club-goers at Clarke Quay

Six friends who were making their way to Clarke Quay were robbed and assaulted by a group of unknown men, who made off with three gold chains worth about $6,000.
The victims - three men and three women - were walking from The Arena Club to a taxi stand opposite Liang Court on Sunday 5.50am, when they were suddenly attacked by a group of men.
One of the victims, who only wants to be known as Sam, told The Straits Times that they had just decided where to have breakfast after celebrating his 30th birthday at The Arena, when the men approached him.
The sales executive said he was punched three times and when he fell to the floor, the men continued to hit him.
A friend who came to the rescue was also beaten, including the three women in the group.
Sam's fiancee, business development officer Lini, 25, told The Straits Times: "There were seven to 10 of them, and they were chanting gang names. Their bodies were covered with tattoos."
The scuffle lasted five minutes, in which the attackers grabbed the gold chains from two of the victims.
The police and Secret Societies Branch of the Criminal Investigation Department had been in touch with the victims, said Lini.
One of the victims, a 38-year-old Frenchman in Singapore for the first time and wanted to be known only as Mr Louis, appeared unruffled by the incident, but his friends said they were horrified on his behalf.
Police confirmed that a report had been lodged and that they received a call at about 5.50am that day requesting for assistance.
The victims were advised to seek medical treatment.
They also said they were disappointed with the security in the area and although they would go back to Clarke Quay in the future, next time they would leave the area earlier.
A spokesman for Clarke Quay said that it has an in-house uniformed security team that works round the clock, and that there are closed-circuit television cameras in place.
Staff who work in clubs and bars at Clarke Quay say it is common for fights to break out, especially over the weekend.
Mr Edwin Phan, 24, who has been working at the Yello Jello club for two years, told The Straits Times: "Sometimes there's blood, with people using champagne and beer bottles to hit each other."
Police say they are looking into this matter.
