A SINGAPOREAN businessman was shot twice in the head by a man riding pillion on a motorcycle as he was leaving his shop in Malaysia late on Tuesday evening.

Mr Frankie Wong Wai Sen, 54, the owner of a fruit and vegetable wholesale business based in Selangor, was killed instantly.

Three suspects have been held, according to the family, who cited Malaysian police.

Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao reported that the three are brothers.

Though the motive is not yet clear, it is understood that Mr Wong's belongings - a gold necklace and RM1,500 (S$630) in his wallet - were left intact.

This is the second reported shooting of a Singaporean in Malaysia this year. In May, a Singaporean man was shot several times outside a pub in Johor Baru, but survived.

Mr Wong is survived by his 51-year-old wife and two daughters, aged 28 and 29.

Ms Karen Wong, the elder of his daughters, told The Straits Times that her father travelled to Malaysia about twice a month to check on the business.

He would stay about a week each time.

According to Lianhe Wanbao, he arrived at the shop located in Subang Jaya at about 11am on the day of the murder.

Around 9.30pm, he was waiting inside his car with a female business partner for his shop to be shuttered when two men on a motorcycle pulled up alongside.

The pillion rider got off and came up to the driver's side, where Mr Wong was, and fired two shots into his head.

The two men then sped off.

No one else was harmed in the incident.

Ms Karen Wong, who is self-employed, said her family received news of her father's death at about 9.45pm the same day.

She said: 'We are very shocked by what has happened. It shouldn't have happened to such a nice man. Whoever did this is very ruthless.'

She added that her father was well-liked by those who knew him and could not have had any enemies. She described him as a very forgiving person who rarely got into any disputes.

Ms Wong did not know if the three men being held by the Malaysian police knew her father.

Ms Wong, who has been to the shop before, said it is located in a busy area. She likened it to Singapore's Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park.

Mr Wong was the owner of a company called T&T Freshmart Wholesales. It occupies a two-storey space more than half the size of a basketball court.

His daughter said the business was 'doing well', though she could not provide details.

When Mr Wong was in Singapore, he would spend his days tending to his plants or cooking meals for his family, she said.

'He was an easily contented man. He always said that for a family to have meals together is a very fortunate thing,' Ms Wong said, adding that the family took frequent vacations together.

Mr Wong was supposed to have come home on Wednesday, in time to celebrate Christmas with his family.

Trio held for murder of shop owner

PETALING JAYA: Three men were arrested in connection with the murder of a wholesale mart owner who was gunned down outside his shop.

Aged between 38 and 49, they were arrested at different locations in Subang Jaya within 24 hours after Lim Wei Seng, 54, was shot dead.

Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said the men, who had criminal records, had been remanded until Monday to assist in investigation.

He said police were still looking for several other people. However, they have yet to ascertain the motive of the murder.

Wong was about to leave after closing shop at Taman Pinggiran USJ here at 11.30pm on Tuesday when two men arrived in a motorcycle.

The pillion rider got off the machine and fired two shots at Wong’s head, killing him at once.

Wong was with his female business partner then. However, she was unharmed.

Family members, when met at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre mortuary, declined to speak to the press.
