Woman charged with aiding ex-boyfriend’s suicide, previously accused of culpable homicide

SINGAPORE — A woman who was previously accused of culpable homicide over the death of her former boyfriend has had her charge downgraded to aiding him to commit suicide and obstructing justice.
Alverna Cher, 39, was charged in the State Courts on Tuesday (26 October) with facilitating 32-year-old Wee Jun Xiang’s commission of suicide through nitrogen gas inhalation at 145A Bedok Reservoir Road on 16 May last year. Cher is accused of turning the valve of a tank of nitrogen gas four to five times, helping Wee to put the tank in a lying position, and positioning the tank to pour the nitrogen gas into an IKEA bag.
Cher also faces a second charge of obstructing the course of justice.
She is accused of requesting a Cheo Oon Hui, Lawrence to drive a motor-van, which contained a tank of nitrogen gas used in the commission of Wee’s suicide abetted by her, away from the multi-storey car park at the location. She had also allegedly disposed of the IKEA bag. She is also accused of falsely informing a police officer that Wee had informed her that he had been having chest discomfort for two weeks before 16 May 2020, and that she believed Wee had died of a heart-attack.
The Singaporean, who is the director of funeral services firm City Funeral Singapore, is represented by pro-bono lawyers Josephus Tan, Cory Wong and Josiah Zee.
If convicted of aiding Wee's suicide, Cher faces a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine.
Cher also faces a maximum seven-year jail term or a fine or both if found guilty of obstructing justice.
