Sinkie boy bitten by a Cobra...

You didn't read the report?, obviously they have no experience, I would not wear a pair of slippers in a grassy area, a covered up boots or canvas shoes. Luckily it was a small cobra, I have encountered a large cobra when I was young, I ran first, ask later!

Raining season now... Be careful when walking on the wet grassy spots at night.. Somebody once told me that this creatures loves to wander around during the night especially when its cold and raining...Now I'll wear running shoes to walk my dog during the night..

Wah lau! Really got so many cobras around, one more thing to be careful.

So, when we let in the Ah Neh FTs in drove, did we also let in their Cobras?

Naughty boy, you want to find a big thick rubber tree trunk or tree trunk, to cannoodle & rubba rubba...the snake beats you to it...did you repent?

Snakes in Ubin not much of problem. Mosquito problem bigger than that. :D And ants if you want picnic with GF. They will surely bite you! :D:p

Interesting account Uncle Yap... Had a close shave while walking the dog too.. Only few months back my dog saved my ass while I walking him around my mom in law's neighbourhood at Changi's Mariam Way.. Was wearing slippers during that night when I nearly stepped on to a small but fierce black snake hissing at me menancingly.. My dog next instinct was to immediately pounced on to the snake but I pulled him away in time before that small black bugger slithered away into a longkang.. Once I was driving in the middle of the nite on the road of the old Changi Hospital... Was drizzling lightly that night when suddenly I slowed down as I thought I saw a long rope on the middle of that road.. Curious, I braked my car, parked it at the side of the road, stepped out of my car and walk towards that ''rope''... And to my horror that ''rope'' was a long 2m python.. Terrified I quickly ran back to my car and waited for the snake to slither inside the longkang besides a bus stop...

That place is Changi camp's area loh. The black one is cobra mostly. They are very easy to see at night (to me) because their scales reflects lights in a unique way. I can see that from 20+m even in the dark. You let the dog excite the cobra a bit their neck will expand. Yes they make the hissing sound. If they are 1m-1.5m in size you can kill them by crushing their head with boots. Stomp on them hard and turn your heel on crushing them. Larger cobra will stand up quite tall and will attack your lower leg higher than the boots. They are also harder to crush. Unless got stick or other weapons you don't use leg to attempt killing it. A thick garden hose is ideal weapon to whack.

I never captured snakes, only kill. Take no POW and 100% KIA.
;)

I was first aid instructor with St John's ambulance brigade for some 15 years but 20+ years ago when I was in school.

In my NS days I used to kill cobras 20-30 of them. Especially during exercise or night prowler duties. Many black cobras in SGP, Sembawang Camp Changi Camp SAFTI exercise areas. Usually 1 meter size. I chase them up and accurately step on their head to squashed them. Larger size can not do this trick. SAF boots not powerful enough.:D

In SAFTI live fire hills I saw a huge black cobra, the thickness was like adult upper arm 3+ meters. It crossed our dirt path in front of our landrover, I got off the veh to look for it but not found. There must be a hole it got hidden. Snakes not so risky there as SAF blind bombs, got countless number of mortar shells around.

For 1st Aid when medical help is too far away and patient could died of heart failure before reaching hospital. Can consider to BURNT the WOUND. Open the wound after tied to stop bleeding. And press hot burning metal against the area containing venom. The venom is bio-toxin meaning it is also protein, and it can not withstand heat. You cook it and protein will disintegrate into something else less lethal.

Burn wound is usually not lethal, far less lethal than snake venom. So if hospital is few days away, you rather have a bad 3rd degree burn rather than a corpse of with failed heart, burn the snake bite. The snake bite is already more painful than the burn itself anyway. :p Ouch!

you may be good in computer but your first aid knowledge sucks and is outdated. Goodness and you are a st john instructor....

i have seen how the st john ambulance operate in EMT situation, no wonder i am not impressed with instructor like you.i was a level 2 paramedic when i was in the army, qualified to go up SCDF ambulance as assist. crew leader.

i am too lazy to goes into detail, for your info i happen to know the first aid treatment applied here. a tourniquet was applied, this was the outdated approach similar to yours and thus most likely this kid will have his leg amputated.

i will be really amazed by stupidity of you guys if you people believe his ridiculous and outdated emergency medicine knowledge

wiki has nice info on the outdated model recommended by our saint john instructor

Application of a tourniquet to the bitten limb is generally not recommended. There is no convincing evidence that it is an effective first aid tool as ordinarily applied.[37] Tourniquets have been found to be completely ineffective in the treatment of Crotalus durissus bites,[38] but some positive results have been seen with properly applied tourniquets for cobra venom in the Philippines.[39] Uninformed tourniquet use is dangerous, since reducing or cutting off circulation can lead to gangrene, which can be fatal.[37] The use of a compression bandage is generally as effective, and much safer.

Cutting open the bitten area, an action often taken prior to suction, is not recommended since it causes further damage and increases the risk of infection.

Sucking out venom, either by mouth or with a pump, does not work and may harm the affected area directly.[40] Suction started after 3 minutes removes a clinically insignificant quantity—less than one thousandth of the venom injected—as shown in a human study.[41] In a study with pigs, suction not only caused no improvement but led to necrosis in the suctioned area.[42] Suctioning by mouth presents a risk of further poisoning through the mouth's mucous tissues.[43] The well-meaning family member or friend may also release bacteria into the victim's wound, leading to infection.

Immersion in warm water or sour milk, followed by the application of snake-stones (also known as la Pierre Noire), which are believed to draw off the poison in much the way a sponge soaks up water.

Application of potassium permanganate.

Use of electroshock therapy. Although still advocated by some, animal testing has shown this treatment to be useless and potentially dangerous.[44][45][46][47]

In extreme cases, where the victims were in remote areas, all of these misguided attempts at treatment have resulted in injuries far worse than an otherwise mild to moderate snakebite. In worst case scenarios, thoroughly constricting tourniquets have been applied to bitten limbs, completely shutting off blood flow to the area. By the time the victims finally reached appropriate medical facilities their limbs had to be amputated

According to your daddy 1st aid too late. Learn how to kill and eat snake LOL

my daddy will return!

This day & age, you ask your GF to go Ubin for picnic, with the ants, the snakes, the mosquitoes the whatever, you make make one bird, angry ! & when you don't get from her, your bird will be angry also.

The commando style mosquitoes I met was at SAFTI jetty at land's end, now gone, I covered myself head to toe in clothes, even the face, slop all sort on anti mosquitoes repellants all over , including those provided by the SAF, the mosquito, found one tiny hole between my sock & boot & attacked!!. Not only that, they were immune to mosquito coild, Baygon & any insecticides aerosols.

I will be utterly surprised if the boy escapes unscathed. This was a FULL bite.

I saw with my own eyes a friend bitten by a baby cobra years back... it was only about one foot long... the bite lasted like just a mili-second as my friend's foot jerked back very quickly and the cobra was obstructed by a box... we had only rafia strings to stop the poison from spreading... killed the snake and took it to the hospital for their reference ==> 2 weeks in hospital !!

When i was in seletar camp, A green color snake bite me.. But i was wearing my boots.. I ran more then 20meters jumping up and down both in disgust and fear.

I have only one fear in life, And that is snakes and its also accompanied with disgust with its slippery body.

You reminded me of a long forgotten product call mosquito coil even you had typo it. :D Long time no use. When we were kids that were used daily. Camping and NS days also used. Now forgot almost all about that. I hate that thing when they break. Because shortened coils can not last until dawn, and fucking mosquito will harass you from a good sleep when the dawn is near, damn Tu-Lan. I remember these little steel plates that we bent and supported the coils to burn. The last time I used that may be 30 yrs ago.:)
