I think the perception that Teochews are overwhelming Catholics is incorrect. There are actually more Teochew Buddhists or Taoists in Hougang and elsewhere in Singapore. It is sure looking like the govt is now trying to distort and twist the whole thing around to depict Alex as the villain out to sow discord between the Catholic faith leaders and the govt, and to disrupt religious and social harmony that will justify another use of the ISA.

I think we should keep things in the proper perspective. To me, Alex was only bemoaning that going by the past example of the Church and govt face off, and how this govt is in the habit of intimidating and cowing adversaries or perceived adversaries into submission if not silence, and ruefully blogging aloud if this is the spirit behind the national Conversation, then nothing will change at all.

Once we let the govt throw in red herrings, and create a diversion, we'll forget all about a rogue govt and get conned into tilting windmills at 'rogues' that the govt points us to.
