SingTel cooperating with Indian licensing probe

By Gaurav Raghuvanshi

SINGAPORE -(MarketWatch)- Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. is cooperating with Indian authorities on an investigation into alleged violations of the nation's telecom licensing rules, a company spokeswoman said Monday.
"SingTel has cooperated with the Department of Telecommunications in India and will continue to do so as and when required," the spokeswoman said in an emailed response to a query from Dow Jones Newswires on the alleged violations, which involve the Singapore company entering into pacts with two Indian operators to provide services to its clients.
India's Central Bureau of Investigation has filed a case against SingTel, India's junior telecommunications minister, Milind Deora, told lawmakers in the upper house of parliament on Friday.
SingTel earlier signed pacts with Bharti Airtel Ltd. and Tata Communications Ltd. to allow them to provide International Private Leased Circuits to the Singaporean company's Indian clients. The Indian government said this violates the rules as SingTel isn't allowed to serve local clients because it doesn't have a telecom license in the country.
International Private Leased Circuits connect various offices of a company to a single network.
The Department of Telecommunications imposed a penalty of INR500 million each on Bharti and Tata Communications for the alleged violations. The two companies have challenged the penalty in the telecom tribunal, Deora said.
