Singapore's athletes should be held accountable for Olympic performances, but line drawn at 'malicious' criticism: Edwin Tong

The telltale signs of Schooling’s downward trajectory were evident after the 2018 Asian Games when he successfully defended his title in a new meet record of 51.04 seconds.

In 2019, the year before the Tokyo Olympics were originally due to take place, he did not qualify for the 100m butterfly semi-finals at the World Championships in South Korea.

At the 2019 SEA Games, Schooling did not look in the best physical shape, which affected his times in the pool.

National training centre head coach Gary Tan had commented then about Schooling having “to change in the lifestyle part of it, especially getting a bit more trim and … to work towards getting fitter as well”.

Now that the Tokyo Olympic campaign is over, the issue of NS deferment comes to the fore for Schooling, the Ministry of Defence (Mindef), and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, which oversees sports.

And the SNOC ignored all these warning signs when they selected Schooling for the Tokyo Olympics?

That’s where u are wrong.

Flying around to take part in competitions to gain experience. Hiring a coach. Having a planned diet.

If u pump in enough money into it, u have half a chance of succeeding.
Not about money as in peopel dont do it to become rich. Maybe in football and hockey and basketball. But not so much swimming.

You are right. For many sports need to pump in money to succeed. Even then might not make it.

Singapore’s athletes at the Olympic Games have a responsibility to be held accountable for their performances but there is a limit when it comes to criticism of their efforts, said Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong on Monday (Aug 2).

.........When asked about Singaporean swimmer Joseph Schooling, who failed to make the semi-finals of the 100m butterfly five years after he won gold at the Rio Olympics, Mr Tong said it was important to give “some space”.

“His results were disappointing, I think he'll be the first to admit it, but at the same time I think let's not overthink it as well and not over comment, I would say, let's give that some space,” he noted.

“Let him think about what he wants to do. And I'm sure that between him, his family, his coach, the NSA (national sport association), they will work out a path forward.”

All of Singapore’s swimmers — Schooling, Quah Ting Wen and Quah Zheng Wen — did not advance to the semi-finals of their events, with no personal bests set.

And Mr Tong noted that it has been a “tough” Olympics for them.

Same logic, if your parents spend money send you to overseas study, it is your responsibility to study hard and do well, right?

I have no interest in swimming and is not a supporter of any swimmer.

What surprised me is that locals make more noise about a local born Olympic Gold Medalist talking about deferment and less noise on all these foreigners and CECA stealing our jobs, living it up , getting easy PR's and not having to serve NS .

How easy is it for the PAP to deflect attention away from the life and death issue of foreigners stealing our future and their screw ups in handling covid.
If you believe cotton comes from sheep, you will believe PAP is always right

These locals probably all think the SG govt spent millions grooming schooling all the way to Olympic champ since he was a young boy! Ignorance is indeed a terrible blight on humanity is it not?

Of course. You cannot expect PAP to be accountable, do you?

PAP only takes the credit when they succeed.

And the SNOC ignored all these warning signs when they selected Schooling for the Tokyo Olympics?

This is the reason that these approving authorities are lying low. They had seen the red lights for the past
two years or more. And did nothing to help him to get out of his life-style (as what his coach said) or his
declining form during the time. They should be held accountable.

lianbeng said they represented Singapore leh.

Fuck off Edwin Tong and may your whole family die!

Malicious enough?

Who the fuck are you, PAP doggie and notable lawyer who represented Kong Hee, to determine what is 'malicious' and what is not?
He thinks his words are pearls of wisdom. Nothing but image damage control. Flop means flop.

Is he trying to say that it is time for these athletes to pay back the govt for all the investments put into them?

They are beginning to see that their BS is not working so well, retreating a little bit:

Singapore Sport Institute chief Toh Boon Yi said his team and the Singapore Swimming Association had noticed
Schooling and Zheng Wen's declining times (not surprising, they did not mention WHEN did they noticed this)
and worked with coaches in Singapore and the US "looking at how to help them overcome challenges" (ie,
still not taking responsibilities)
