unilateral declarations of independence are not illegal but considered controversial in international law. unilateral declaration counts as independence only if there is independence in actuality.

Original agreement, UK supposed to grant singapore independent from UK when Malaysian was formed on 31 Aug 1963...
there was a delay and LKY did his wayang show (Malysia Solidarity Day celebration)on 31 Aug 1963....some called it a UDI....this was reported inthe MSM and a Government press statement was issued....
we are not splitting hairs here....
the dispute is what was the status of Singapore after LKY so called UDI to date Singapore joined Malaysia on 16 Sep 1963.
this is answered when Singapore signed the amendment

this is an official document....not whose father says what......Merdeka....Merdeka....Merdeka....blah...blah...blah.

People failed to realised that Lee Kuan Yew is not after Singapore's independence, he is after a Malaysia with him as PM. Gaining independence from GB gave him a platform to join Malaysia.

1963 is lost on him. It is not newsworthy.

1965 gave him political ammunition to win over Sinkees and gave him absolute power. He is not interested in Rule of Law, he is after Rule by Law. His law, 9 aug 1965, is Singapore's National Day. Usually, N Day is Independence Day.

Really a dummy. In fact, S'pore got full control of defence and foreign affairs not on 31st August 1963; it got it even earlier (somewhere between 1959 and 1963). So in fact, Singapore was already independent then.
