Native born Singaporeans have always struggled with a national identity. What is our national identity? Some say kiasuness, some say a work ethic bar non, etc. Whatever it was, it used to provide Singaporeans with a sort of swagger, to the point of obnoxiousness. Going from the 60s to the 70s and even to the 80s, there was some justification for this. People born in the 50s and 60s will know that the country started out with a lot of uncertainty. By and large, we were successful in transforming ourselves to what we became by the 80s. I do not credit Old Goat for all of this, as other factors like our geography , Albert WInsemius, and the infrastructure left behind by the British were all vital factors.

But SIngaporeans were justifiably proud. When you go overseas in the 80s, strangers you meet always say what an amazing job Singapore has done, and what a nice place it is. Around this time Singaporeans started becoming arrogant and obnoxious when they visit other countries. For example, if a Singaporeans returned from a visit to Rome, and went asked how was the visit, they would more often say that it’s not as clean as Singapore, the buses are not as frequent as Singapore, everything is more chaotic than Singapore, etc. All without mentioning the 2000 years of history there, that’s not available in Singapore. It became almost an ugly Singaporean type tourist, and they were especially insufferable in places like Malaysia or Thailand.

Singaporeans were consistently told and in fact brainwashed by the PAP leadership into how great they were, how hard working and successful they were, what great leaders they had, how lucky they were to live in Singapore, etc. This created a sense of false bravado and open bragging in front of people of other nationalities.

Now, we have arrived at a major crisis of national identity. It turns out now that the people are not as hard working. And in fact, they are not even that smart. Scholarships for education are freely given to FTs at all levels of schooling. Why? Are singaporean students not smart enough to get these scholarships for themselves? The PAP has been exhorting them to work harder and smarter for years now. But, What is the PAP saying? That working 60 hour weeks is not enough anymore? We are not smart enough in our own economy and must rely on FTs? And in fact, the people’s value to the PAP, and its confidence in its own people has eroded to such a degree that the govt. is now wholesale importing FTs. What does it say to you as a people that your own govt., the only one that you have ever known, now says that a total stranger from PRC, India, Phillipines is preferable to you? Its like PAPA Lee telling his own children (us), that we are lazy, stupid, and henceforth, he will adopt new sons and daughters from other countries.

The impact on the national psyche is huge. The whole country collectively needs a head shrink. Its impossible to feel confidence (derived from a national identity), when you know your job can be gone tomorrow, and that the costs of living keep going up and you are barely keeping afloat. And worse of all your own govt. IS CRITICIZING YOUR OWN ABILITY TO DO ANYTHING RIGHT WHILE PRAISING TO THE HIGH HEAVENS, THE SUSPECT ABILITIES OF THE FTs THEY LET IN.

Singaporeans have since birth been beaten down and have a hang dog look about them. They are beaten down in school, beaten down in NS, and now their financial and economic prospects are beaten down further more by their own govt. It’s time to hold our heads up and say enough is enough. If you don’t think we are working hard or smart enough, than fuck you. If you don’t think we are procreating enough, than fuck you, you did it to us with your forced abortions and stop at 2 policies. If you don't think we are smart enough to manage our own retirement money, well fuck you too, since we don’t see you doing too well with Temasek and GIC. I say this to all singaporeans because the writing is plainly on the wall for all to see. Judging from the speeches of Old Goat and Gay Loong during National Day, the FT tap will remain open for a long time. Take your country back.

bro,
your words resonate well with me. growing up in the 70s & 80s was the best time of my life. we all felt a great sense of pride but some of us still recalled our humble beginnings. always recalled a mysterious person donating incredibly large amount of money periodically in those days. those were the glorious days :o:o:o

Take your country back.

In the past, most Singaporeans would generally be respected and welcomed most places they went.
Mainly for being well educated, reasonably articulate, logical and intelligent, perhaps most importantly for having a sense of fairness and being incorruptible.
Somewhere along the line, we seem to have lost our way.
Fugitives wanted by interpol, corruption in both private and public sectors, scams and frauds, gang and non gang related beatings some leading to deaths, lots of loansharking cases, etc etc.

These could perhaps be attributed to one main reason: Values passed down from parents, grandparents, maids, teachers, and/or leaders.
The policies including FTs and what not are more the effect than the cause. There has to be an underlying reason why they want to keep the FT tap open right? Can't be simply because they "like" FTs more than locals. What is that reason? It goes back to values and how they view the role of government.

Where would Singapore be without foreign domestic maids? Many children grow up learning what tasks are "worthy" for them to do and "not worthy". Therein lies the Singapore identity and values.

I agree with u 100%, u can actually go overseas and be proud to be a sinkie. Now our own govt. thinks we are useless.

I think parents inpart the same values generally speaking to their offsprings, the problem is that singapore is very cult centric. Just like countries that have dominant leader personalities (Germany - Hitler, Russia - Stalin, China - Mao, etc.) are all influenced by their leaders. They take on the personlaity of the leaders. Normal Germans became intolerant of Jews because their cult figure Leader was. Normal Chinese were intolerant of education and progress because their cult leader Mao was. And Singaporeans are now like their cult leader Old Goat, impatient, money minded, critical, self centred, etc. U want to look for blame, look here.

There are 2 things lacking:
1. Complete screening and training for the maids.
2. Enpowerment from the parents to the maids to be in charge of the spoilt brats when they are not around.

When you have situations where the 10 year old spoilt brats are telling the 20 year old maid what to do or when the families are inside the restaurant feasting and the maid is sitting in a chair outside, it's no wonder that the brats grow up to be spoilt adults thinking that they rule the world or their ah kong rules the world. In some cases even, the maids rebel or fight back and then there could be tragic consequences.

There's no reason why 10 year old kids shouldn't be doing housework, supervised by a suitably trained maid. At least it will make them stop thinking they are princes and princesses.

Traits like these are very catchy and infectious, and eventually deadly. Once they permeate the society, it's probably better not to have any babies at all.
Just let the population dwindle to zero, and those remaining can go to various different countries and start again as foreign talents there.

Yes, u are talking about the total extinction of the singapore race. They followed their leader to their ultimate death.

Yes, I agree 100%, but even if you empower these 20 year old maids, they still don't know how to handle it, since they have no kids of their own.

parenting must be left to parents. the parent have to be the main care giver, not the grandparents or helpers. imagine the horrors when parents these days expect the school teachers to teach them values. what rubbish!

in some cases, the school teachers are too busy installing cameras in the toilets to have time to teach values...................

Can't agree more with you.
I heard someone describe Singaporean kids as naive but jaded. How sad. Very worrisome for our future.

Many Singaporeans, especially Singapore Chinese, like to cite foods as a common Singaporean identifier. This Hari Raya Aidilfitri reminds us that's not the case. In fact, Singaporeans, especially Muslims and non-Muslims, are separated by foods. Commonly cited Singapore national dishes like bak kwa, bak kut teh, bak chor mee, char siew, char kway teow, very few Muslims have ever tasted before. How can these be their national dishes?
