The Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) reported a minimum temperature of 21°C as sustained rain fell around the island on Friday morning (12 January). According to the MSS website, the mercury dipped to 21.7°C in a few locations.

MSS had earlier reported that the prevailing Northeast Monsoon season was forecast to continue “into the first fortnight of 2018”.

Even as the cooler temperatures had Singaporeans reaching for their sweaters, on Thursday MSS released its review of 2017’s weather and climate, noting that it was the warmest year on record not influenced by an El Niño event. The mean annual temperature in 2017 was 27.7°C, making it the joint 12th warmest year since records began in 1929.

This, said MSS, was indicative of a long-term temperature rise due to a combination of global warming and urbanisation.

Netizens expressed their surprise at the low temperatures. Twitter user @_guanlinie said “omg its so cold im shivering…. and im actually using a hot pack…. in singapore…. who would have thought….”

Singkieland cool is not good because it's the high humidity that makes it uncomfortable. Cool n dry air is the best. It's called air-con

Ahh... reminds me of the early 80s when ambient temperature doesn't go above 28 degrees C in the day.
