Singaporean dies of suspected hypothermia in HK

HONG KONG: A Singaporean man on a trip to Hong Kong to take part in a war game simulation has died of suspected hypothermia after temperatures plunged to a low of 15 deg C.

According to local press reports, the death occurred at around 1pm on Saturday at a war game simulation centre in Yuen Long district, in the north of the territory near Shenzhen.

The Chinese-language Ming Pao Daily News said the 51-year-old man, Mr Derek Tham, had arrived at the centre together with his niece and several other friends and was walking towards the venue of the war game when he suddenly fainted.

The paper said Mr Tham and his fellow war game enthusiasts were in their combat fatigues, had drawn their weapons, and were raring to go when the tragedy happened.

His companions quickly alerted the police and an ambulance arrived shortly afterwards and rushed Mr Tham to the nearby Pok Oi Hospital, where he was officially pronounced dead at 2.34pm, according to Apple Daily.

The cause of his death is still being investigated, although a doctor who spoke to the press told reporters that Mr Tham, who suffered from high-blood pressure, could have died after the cold temperature in the area triggered a heart attack.

According to Apple Daily, Mr Tham had arrived in Hong Kong on Friday evening to visit his relatives. It is understood that his wife has flown to Hong Kong after learning of his death.

Reporters from Singapore's Chinese-language Lianhe Wanbao visited the couple's flat at Block 116, Simei Street 1 yesterday and spoke to a neighbour, who recounted how Mrs Tham told her at around 4pm on Saturday that she had to rush to Hong Kong as her husband had died unexpectedly.

The neighbour, who wanted to be known only as Madam Wang, told reporters that Mrs Tham also asked her to help look after their pet dog as there was no one else in the flat. Mr Tham and his wife do not have any children.

Fine 20K for what????

our judge fine the contractor bec he didnt explain our singapore heat to the chinaman properly, even though there are many water points for the chinaman to drink.

So hong kees gamer should also be fined 20k for not explaining properly to sinkies on the danger of 15 degree c mah

15℃ Isn't cold! It's T shirt range. 11℃ and below is when the warm clothing comes out.

RIP Mr Tham! Bob and I will always remember you as a fun-loving guy!

15 deg.C is just very cold aircon level, shouldn't have killed anyone. Girls can still wear sphagetti straps and miniskirts. Under 10 deg.C is when jackets are needed.

Air temperature per se is one thing. But wind chill factor means a lower than air temp when the air touches the skin.

lots of overseas deaths.. will overseas travel plunge? someone should come out and tell the singaporeans to gamble in the casinos instead of risking their lives overseas :D

Blame no one cos mr tham was already a sick man! Rip to him..

any weakling who succumbs to 15 deg c weather in hk deserves the darwinian award.
