These 'reality' shows are absolutely retarded. Everything is modeled after American Idol and various other spinoff talent/singing competition shows.

There's also 非诚勿扰 (matchmaking show in China), and 黄金年华 (local oldie singing competition).

Reality shows get watched because there is a voyeuristic tendency to enjoy watching people whom you don't know get embarrassed, humiliated or endangered in public. The highlight of these shows are the embarrassing bad performances and the scathing comments given by the judges or rival contestants.

That's why there's a traffic jam whenever a road accident occurs: the voyeurs slow down their vehicles to enjoy the view of wreckage.
