(Bloomberg) -- Singapore’s government is “doing its utmost” to prevent the spread of coronavirus without having a complete lockdown as is the case with some countries, President Halimah Yacob said in a Facebook post.

Her comments come as Singapore works to limit disruptions to companies and workers after Malaysia imposed rules on Monday to prevent its citizens from traveling overseas. The ban has raised concerns of labor and food shortages for the city-state, which heavily relies on its Malaysian neighbor.

Halimah said the social and economic disruptions are “enormous” if such a lockdown was to take place. Singapore’s economy is already facing a recession due to virus-linked disruptions to trade and tourism.

Singapore has yet to reach the peak in terms of coronavirus transmission, with imported cases continuing to be a concern, Halimah said. On Thursday, Singapore reported 32 new cases with 24 imported, which were all returning residents and long-term visa holders with travel history to Europe, other Asean countries and North America.

SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) on Friday (March 20) announced 40 more cases of Covid-19, of which 30 were imported.

Among the 30, a majority of them came back from the United Kingdom, which has a total of more than 3,000 confirmed cases and almost 150 deaths as of Thursday.

Twenty-two of these imported cases are Singapore citizens and permanent residents. The other seven are long-term pass holders, while one is here on a short-term visit.

“The majority of new cases are imported cases and they are arising in returning Singapore residents,” said Associate Professor Kenneth Mak, director of medical services at the Health Ministry (MOH), during a press briefing on Friday.

As for locally transmitted cases, many likely occurred during events and social gatherings, or while interacting with colleagues at workplaces, said Health Minister Gan Kim Yong, who co-chaired the briefing.

Hence, the Government has introduced measures to suspend large gatherings involving 250 people or more, and also to extend the suspension of senior-centric activities.

“We want to see fewer people out and about, we would like to see reduction in social gatherings or any activity involving close contact that can result in transmission of the virus,” said National Development Minister Lawrence Wong, who is the other co-chair of the multi-ministry taskforce convened to manage the Covid-19 outbreak.

Same mentality as when those Scoot flights from Wuhan were arriving in late January.

Even the pappies' beloved CECA Land major city is on lockdown.

When it comes to fixing opposition and bloggers, they are very fast and decisive. When it concerns sinkie lives, they are reactive, drag their feet, adopt a piecemeal approach. For example PMDs and now Covid-19. We truly have the government we deserve. Only God can help us now!

PAP really damn fuckup lor. KNN

When the cases start hitting 100 300 the contact tracing department will be overwhelmed.

It wont work anymore after a tipping point.

Halimah Yacob is the last person I would seek advice from. If the Government really cares about protecting its residents and citizens from Covid-19. 'Lockdown' would seem inevitable.
