Gallup: Most Singaporeans have enough
money to provide for adequate housing

December 31st, 2010 | Author: Editorial

Most Singaporeans have enough money to provide adequate
housing for themselves and families, according to a recent global
poll conducted by Gallup.
The results are based on telephone and face-to-face interviews
with approximately 1,000 adults in 125 countries, 2,000 adults
in Russia, 4,150 adults in China, and 6,000 adults in India, aged
15 and older, conducted in 2009 and 2010.

The respondents in each country were asked this question:

“Have there been times in the past 12 months when you did not
have enough money to provide adequate shelter or housing for
you and your family?”

Only 1 per cent of Singaporeans responded ‘yes’, placing the Singapore
at the bottom of the list.

The poll findings seem to contradict growing public sentiment that
public housing is becoming increasing unaffordable with sky-rocketing
prices of HDB flats in the last few years fueled by the relentless
influx of immigrants.

As expected, the Straits Times gave prominent coverage to the Gallup
poll finding today to convince Singaporeans that Singapore
properties are still relatively ‘affordable.’

While most Singaporeans may be able to afford their homes right now,
it doesn’t mean that they do not have to be ‘debt slaves’ to their
houses for the rest of their lives.

As Mark Twain said, there's "lies, damned lies, and statistics". The results of these polls depends on the sample size, how the sample is chosen, and how the questions are phrased. If any of these are biased in any way, then the results will be skewed.

Its probably more accurate to look at the average and median income and the annual salary multiple cost of houses. Opinion polls are never an accurate reflection of the state of society.
