Odd-job worker charged with murder of rag-and-bone man in Chinatown

A 57-year-old worker was charged yesterday with the murder of a rag-and-bone man in Chinatown.

Lee Beng Chuan allegedly killed Mr Heng Teck Hong, 70, at the People's Park Food Centre between 7.45pm and 8.30pm on Tuesday.

Mr Heng was found lying motionless and paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

It is believed that the rag-and-bone man had been punched after taking a swig of beer at the food centre.

Mr Heng, who lived in a one-room rental flat in the Chinatown area, was known to be an eccentric person among his neighbours.

He had been spotted climbing down from a staircase landing into his flat after forgetting to take his keys with him.

Lee, who appeared in court wearing an orange polo T-shirt, will be remanded at the Central Police Division. His case will be mentioned again next Thursday.

The odd-job worker faces the death penalty if he is convicted of murder. Shaffiq Alkhatib

What kind of stupid misleading title is this?

You mean to say that because he is poor, he should go unpunished for murder or manslaughtering?

The case on what is reported sound more like manslaughter rather than murder. Murder would normally equate with intention and planning. In this incident, a drunk with no intent or prior planning should have been charged manslaughter. However, without detail case points, one should not jump to conclusion.
