NYT has problems with rogue reporters, this is mentioned in the movie itself, hence the foundation of its status was rocked, what with plagiarism (Jayson Blair) and other charges. This does not apply to the local papers, as people know they are garmen mouthpiece.
The problem people do have is that the issues and the problems they meet in real life are not accurately reported and reflected in the news. eg the Ferrari Ma Chi case - readers were pissed when tabloids tried to 'defend' how wealthy and rich the PRC wrong doer was, when it was obvious that the rich Ferrari owner was blatantly flouting traffic rules. How to be report news objectively like that. That episode clearly showed that the editors do not know how to manage public sensitivities, much like like the MIW (are they any different anyway?).
