Taiwan, Japan and S. Korea press is classified FREE. Phillipines improve to be PARTIALLY FREE. Highest ranking are Norway, Sweden where press freedom is high and media is highly objective . Singapore is ranked 152 and classified NOT FREE. Other countries in this category are N. Korea. Link to report Recently PM Lee was asked about the low press freedom in Singapore. He replied that he believe that the media has to be MANAGED. In fact all print media is owned by the govt. In fact over the yrs,, the govt has filled its journalist ranks with former civil servants and scholars. Notable example are Chua Mui Hong who was formerly working ISD. Why must the media be MANAGED? I will tell you why a little later. In a recent parliament seating Low Thia Kiang asked that cabinet papers of last 30 yrs, be released so that they can be studied and lessons learnt. Lawrence Wong replied that it is not in the interest of the people for them to Know. Why is it the people of Singapore should not know and should not have access to objective information instead of managed information? Because information is key to knowing and understanding what the govt is doing to the people of Singapore. Take the work force numbers. For years the PAP govt has refused to divulge what % of the workforce is Singaporean, they always tell us the foreign workforce is 30+% giving the false impression that Singaporeans form 70% of the workforce, however the 70% figure consists of PRs who are foreigners and Singaporeans - recent analysis show that Singapore born Singaporeans are likely to be a minority in the workforce today - this marginalisation of Singaporeans they don't want you to know so it has to be hidden. For years the govt hid figures of scholarships figures awarded to foreigners until NCMP queried them in parliament. To understand why the PAP govt needs to manage and hide information from citizens , one has to understand, the underlying motivation and model of the Singapore govt. 1. The S'pore govt model itself as S'pore Inc.a corporation with many companies linked to it GLCs. 2. Its primary interest is to make Singapore Inc rich and successful. On the surface, a rich and successful Singapore Inc is good for all Singaporeans ....so govt always say 'for your own good' we do this and that...import foreigners etc. 3. The PAP interests is completely aligned with Singapore Inc by way of jobs ...elites from the scholarship system occupy top jobs and get paid millions higher that elsewhere. 4. But like a typical company the interest of workers and business is only partially aligned. The business has to be profitable and sustainable for workers to keep their jobs but the business who also like keep wages low, make workers work as hard as possible, give them less benefits, sack them when demand is low to save costs. Replace them with cheapest workers available when there is a chance. 5. By operating Singapore as Singapore Inc, a business like approach, the interests of Singaporeans is not aligned with that of govt. Hence there is a need to manage and hide information.....censor information, Singapore's press freedom is the lowest among developed countries, and worse than most third world country. Our wage structure resembles a 3rd world country so does our income inequality. Our foreign worker import is highest among advance countries, no other country outside middle east, even come close. Singaporeans are being marginalised and displace in their own country.Relative poverty rate is highest among developed countries. That is why the pap has to manage and control information so that Singaporeans are ignorant that they are being cut down by extractive policies that benefit the elites and their network of companies. |
