Associate Professor Hee Hwan Tak from the Singapore Medical Group's Centre for Spine and Scoliosis Surgery says his clinic sees about 5 to 7 new patients who suffer from backache every month. That's a 10 to 15 per cent increase from last year, and the majority of these new patients are aged between 12 to 18 years old. The reason - more children are suffering from backache is their heavy schoolbags.

Ideally, schoolbags should weigh about 10 per cent of a child's body weight, and no more than 20 to 25 per cent. But when RazorTV visited two primary schools and two secondary schools, it found that an average school bag weighs between 4 to 5kg. One even tipped the scales at a whopping 8kg.

This would exceed the recommended maximum weight for a Primary 3 student or younger, who on average weighs about 28kg. Find out what parents and children have to say about their overweight backpacks and what schools are doing to help lighten the load.
