CRIME rates in Singapore for 2010 have fallen, according to the police, but three specific areas of concern have been identified.

They are:

1. Cheating cases involving rental and phone scams

Rental scams accounted for 11 per cent of all cheating cases in 2010, and saw a rise of 40 cases or 21 per cent as compared to 2009.

There was a drop in the number of phone scam cases, but the total amount of money offenders made off with increased, with victims losing a total of $4 million as compared to $3 million in 2009.

However, the number of lottery scams still made up the bulk of cheating cases. Victims were swindled of $3.8 million in 2010.

2. Youth crime

The number of youths arrested for rioting rose from 468 to 531 in 2010, despite an overall drop in the number of youths arrested for crimes.

Cases of youth violence dominated the headlines late 2010, with 'street-corner gangs' catching the nation's attention.

3. Outrage of modesty cases

Last year also saw an 11 per cent spike in the number of outrage of modesty cases. A total of 1,414 cases of molest were reported as compared to 1,273 cases in 2009. In contrast, the number of offenders arrested increased, from 719 offenders in 2009 to 888 in 2010.
