Three years ago, Mr Melva Yip was first in the queue when the iPhone 4 was launched here.

The next year, when the iPhone 4S was made available, he was again first in line.
Same for last year, when the iPhone 5 came out.

On Thursday, the 23-year-old Nanyang Polytechnic student was again first in line among about a dozen others at the Paragon M1 store at 10pm, in anticipation of the iPhone 5S which is due to be launched on Friday.

For all these years, he’s waited between 15 and 18 hours each time, just so he can get his hands on the latest model.

Said Mr Yip: “It’s an achievement for me, waiting tests my patience and my willpower. There’s satisfaction in being the first.”

When the much-awaited iPhone 5S hit Singapore stores on Friday morning, hundreds of people dashed for the gold edition.

Within one hour of StarHub and M1 opening their stores at 8am, all the stock for the gold-coloured phone ran out. The iPhone 5S is also available in silver and black.

SingTel, which allowed customers to reserve a model of their choice online on Wednesday, confirmed on Friday that the gold model was sold out within four minutes of the telco taking online orders. These customers were also given time slots to pick up their sets at SingTel's launch event at Marina Bay Sands from 8am on Friday to Sunday. Some 10,000 customers were given appointment slots to pick up their phones.

Despite having secured an appointment and a set of his choice, accountant John Yap, 24, still showed up at Marina Bay Sands at 9pm on Thursday. "I want the gold edition and I don't want any hiccup," he said. "And I need to rush to work after that."

Think about it, Singaporeans are not that bad. We are rather timid and gracious. Thank you.

Long wait: Noah Green shelters from the rain outside Apple’s Regent Street store while he waits for the iPhone 5s launch ...

First in line at the technology giant’s flagship Regent Street store was Gad Harari, who said he was prepared to sell his spot for £1,000.

The 17-year-old student from Hendon was preparing to spend his second night in a makeshift tent as part for a four-day wait for the new smartphone, which features a fingerprint scanner.

Mr Harari took his place outside the central London outlet with his friend Noah Green, also 17.

‘We are always among the first to get a new iPhone,’ he said.

‘I came down on Monday night to be the first – this time we really wanted to be first.’

‘I would probably sell my place in the queue for about £1,000. There are crazy people who are willing to do that.’

Both students said they plan to buy the 5S, which was unveiled for the first time last week along with Apple’s first mid-range phone the 5C.

The 5S device, said to be twice as fast as its predecessor, sets itself apart from its competitors with its Touch ID feature that allows users to unlock their phone with the touch of a finger – but has been criticised by some.

This is what I'm faced with each time I visit London. Every single face in the crowd is an ah neh. Not a white face in sight (except for security)

I think us Singaporean have got it quite easy.

Sinkie sheep believe good things come to all who wait....herd mentality...got queue means good.

Could it be these ah nehs are paid by whites to queue for them? or these ah nehs are the rich indians..but if they are rich, they wont be queuing anyway

Chinese love GOLD...all sold out in double quick time...
It does not matter what is inside - good or bad. They simply love what is GOLD!!!

I am no Chinese yes ah?

that is good news for Gold mines and gold related industries. Chinese, Indians and most asians are obsessed with it. And they will keep demand high...If i have the cash,, I will buy shares in gold mines.

I am no Chinese yes ah?

I hope somebody go stand in front of his tent and beat him up in the tent.
