SINGAPORE: The national culinary team was proclaimed World Champion at the Expogast Culinary World Cup 2014 in Luxembourg, defending the title it won four years ago.

The six chefs sent to represent Singapore in the international culinary competition, which is held once every four years, emerged ahead of more than 105 teams from five continents to clinch the title, according to a joint press release by the Singapore Chefs Association and Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) on Friday (Nov 28).

The team had also bagged the gold medal in Cold Display and Hot Cooking categories, it added.

The chefs who participated this year are: Louis Tay, Executive Chef of Tanglin Club Singapore; Yew Eng Tong, Chef de Cuisine at Ocean Restaurant; Teo Yeow Siang, Executive Chef at Lavish Dine Catering; Jim Gim, Sous Chef at Marina Bay Sands; and Ivy Wong and Triston Fang, Pastry Chefs from Swissotel the Stamford.

"We are happy to have won the Championship. The Singapore Chefs’ Association
has always believed that competitions were a good way for culinary professionals to
not only showcase their talent and creativity, but also a way for them to learn from
their counterparts from across the globe and improve," said Mr Edmund Toh, President of the Singapore Chefs Association.

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean also congratulated the team. He said on Facebook on Friday: "Happy that our chefs can aspire to be world champions. Well done guys!"
