Sats officer in ICU after eating tainted food from Spize

The New Paper
Nov 13, 2018

A Sats Singapore officer is in a critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU) after consuming food from Spize.
He ate the catered food during a Deepavali celebration on Nov 6.

The New Paper understands that his lungs and kidneys are affected.

He is one of 49 people who fell ill after consuming the food from Spize, causing 21 people to be hospitalised.

The licence of the Spize outlet at River Valley that supplied 88 bento sets for the occasion was suspended last Friday.

The celebrations were organised by security company Brinks Singapore and held on their premises.

The officer attended the event as he was deployed to Brink's Singapore, though the event itself did not involve Sats.

A Brink's Singapore spokesman said "a number" of their employees fell ill after eating the food that they catered for the celebrations, and that they are currently working closely with the public health authorities.

The National Environment Agency (NEA), Ministry of Health (MOH) and Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority released a joint statement last Friday saying they are investigating several cases of gastroenteritis traced to the consumption of food prepared at the restaurant at 409 River Valley Road.

The statement said they were notified of the cases on Nov 7 and conducted a joint inspection on the same day.

"Several hygiene lapses were observed, including leaving ready-to-eat food uncovered in a chiller, not providing soap for hand washing (soap dispenser was faulty) and slotting knives for preparing ready-to-eat food in the gap between the food preparation tables," said the statement.

"The suspension will be in place until NEA is satisfied that the public health risks have been addressed."

Mr Haresh Sabnani, 41, the co-owner of Spize, apologised to customers on Facebook.

In a reply to posts on the Spize Facebook page, Mr Haresh said they were aware of the 49 cases including the officer warded in the ICU after speaking to MOH on Friday.

He said: "We have immediately closed our River Valley outlet and will be disposing of all food items.

"The gravity of the situation is nothing we have experienced before and we seek your patience and understanding."

Mass food poisoning case in Singapore claims second victim

SINGAPORE: The mass food poisoning outbreak involving an Indian rojak stall at the Geylang Serai temporary market has claimed its second victim.

Norani Kassim, 59, who was warded in Alexandra Hospital, died shortly before 10am on Wednesday. The hospital said she was warded with food poisoning on Saturday.

To date, the outbreak has killed another woman, 57-year-old canteen assistant Aminah Samijo and caused a 38-year-old expectant mother, Rosiah Samat, to miscarry.

Another 137 people have also fallen ill. The Health Ministry said 37 people were hospitalised and 100 others received outpatient treatment when they experienced abdominal cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea after eating at the stall.

'I would never eat street food after reading this report': Scientists appalled as tests on Delhi food stalls find high levels of faecal matter in golgappa and momo

By Neetu Chandra Sharma

If you are unable to fight the urge to dig into spicy water-filled crispy golgappas or steaming momos, here’s a very strong - and shocking - reason to say no.

A new study has found high faecal contamination in such fast food and junk food items, especially in several west and central Delhi localities.

Underlining that street food and hygiene have always been strange bedfellows, the study by Institute of Hotel Management, Catering and Nutrition, Pusa, shows extremely high volumes of E. coli bacteria, which can cause severe infections, in these snacks.

Taking note of the report, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has written to Delhi’s food safety commissioner to check the quality of street food items.

“We conducted the study to analyse the microbial load in Delhi’s street food. It was done with a survey of commonly consumed street food by 100 individuals,” said Dr Arpita Sharma of the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering and Nutrition.

“We chose five locations in West Delhi, where daily sales were the maximum, for collecting samples. For microbial analysis, five street and five franchisee food products were taken from the most popular shops. We collected food samples (samosa, golgappa, burger and momos) twice from the street shops and franchisee outlets at a one-month interval,” she said, adding that the samples were drawn from west and central Delhi.

To the surprise of scientists, even samples from posh areas like Connaught Place were found to be infected with bacteria.

Other famous markets where samples were tested include Rajouri Garden main market, Rajendra Place, and Subash Nagar. The normal Most Probable Number (MPN) of coliform bacteria is 50 or less as per the Central Pollution Control Board, but it was found to be over 2,400 in the samples of branded burger, vegetarian and non-vegeterian momos and other food items.

The bacterial pathogens commonly found in street eateries are Bacillus cereus (causes vomiting and diarrhoea), Clostridium perfringens (abdominal cramps and diarrhoea), Staphylococcus aureus (vomiting, appetite loss, abdominal cramps and mild fever), and Salmonella species (typhoid, food poisoning, irritation and inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract).

“This is a matter of great concern. I would never eat street food after reading this report,” said Dr Shobha Broor, microbiologist at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

“The report literally means that whatever we eat, we are ingesting faeces.”

Curry house chef prepared food after wiping his bottom with his bare hands because he doesn't use toilet paper for 'cultural reasons'

  • Mahbub Chowdhury, 46, from Swindon, ran the Yeahya Flavour of Asia
  • Inspectors found bottle in kitchen that was covered in 'faecal matter'
  • Chef filled it with water from kitchen taps before using it to clean backside

Mahbub Chowdhury, 46, from Swindon, wiped his bottom using his hands before preparing food at Yeahya Flavour of Asia

A takeaway chef wiped his bottom using his hands before preparing food because he does not use toilet paper for 'cultural reasons', a court heard.

Mahbub Chowdhury, 46, from Swindon, was found to have a filthy bottle in the kitchen of Yeahya Flavour of Asia, which inspectors concluded was covered in faecal matter.

When questioned, he said he filled the empty milk bottle with water from the kitchen taps before using it to clean his backside after going to the toilet.

Chowdhury prepared meat and fish curries at the takeaway, which was run out of a rented kitchen at the Nine Elms pub.

The chef, who no longer works at the takeaway, pleaded guilty to ten counts of breaching food hygiene regulations at Swindon Magistrates Court.

He was fined more than £5,000 last year for ten similar offences relating to food hygiene.

Rosie Heath, prosecuting, said environmental health officers who visited the business in May last year found 'very poor standards of hygiene'.

She said: 'In the kitchen under the double sinks [they] found an empty plastic milk bottle which was extremely dirty and was covered with brown fingerprints.

'When asked, Mr Chowdhury explained he filled the bottle with water from the kitchen taps and used it to clean his bottom after visiting the toilet.

'He did not use toilet paper for cultural reasons. Inspectors concluded the brown finger prints was faecal matter.'

Mark Glendenning, defending, said the milk bottle was never examined and the marks could have been spices.

Chowdhury will be sentenced at Swindon Crown Court.

NO LOO ROLL: HOW MUSLIMS, HINDUS AND OTHERS USE WATER WHEN THEY GO TO THE TOILET

3324467100000578-3537652-A_jug_called_a_lota_is_filled_with_water_to_wash_after_going_to_-m-4_1460555208323.jpg

A jug, called a lota, is filled with water to wash after going to the toilet

Muslims, Hindus and others in India and other South Asian countries, as well as in the Middle East, use water to clean themselves after going to the toilet.

A jug, called a lota, is filled with water, or a hose or bidet shower is used. Traditionally, the left hand is used to wash after going to the toilet, while the right hand is used to eat.

In Islam, there are a set of practices laid out regarding toilet etiquette.

Although they are not compulsory, many devout Muslims follow the teachings.

The Qadaa' al-Haajah code states that one should clean their private parts using water and their left hand, or three stones.

In Hindu scripture, there are also detailed instructions about purifying rituals that should follow urination and defecation.

Using water to clean your anus after releasing your bowel actually is a good practice. It is more clean and hygienic compared to using toilet paper as it leave residue as well as caused teared to the anus while rubbing the paper against the butt cheek. If that person practice good hygiene by at least thoroughly clean him/her hands … it shall be ok. Cultural or not, we must adopt what is good.

that's bs. as i have mentioned several times on this site, it's not only a waste of water but gives the wrong sense of "cleanliness" just because water is used to hose shit down the toilet. it does not. it's actually more gross and unhygienic. what you don't see with your naked eyes in airborne water droplets and vapor that are sprayed all over because of being hosed with a water jet facing up (since arsehole is facing down) is the presence of fecal matter and bacteria from shit floating in the droplets and vapor. moreover, the spray not only gets in contact with shit on your arsehole and lofts it airborne the water also deflects/reflects from your arsehole to surface of toilet and deflects/reflects again from smooth surface of toilet to all over the toilet cubicle. when you use a bidet hose on your arsehole and flush the toilet without covering the lid you are also in danger of breathing in the very shit that you try to wash and flush away. if you keep your mouth and eyes open while you hose and flush then the shit not only hits your nostrils but also your eyeballs and mouth.

the cleanest and most eco-friendly and efficient method is to use toilet paper that is lightly wet from damping a folded 2-ply (so it's 4-ply) and using it for dabbing of dry toilet paper to clean your arse. a wet folded 2-ply is too wet to clean your arse as it will break easily upon contact with rectal lips. set it aside on a clean flat surface (if there's no clean flat surface, use part of the toilet lid or one of your thighs since you have to pull your pants down anyway). dab wet 2-ply with dry folded toilet paper and use the slightly damped paper to wipe your arse. slightly damped paper will not scratch your arse. on every roll of toilet paper there's a grain direction. fold, dab, and wipe along the grain and not obtuse to it. doing otherwise will rip your paper apart easily. repeat until arse is spotless and use the wet folded 2-ply (by now it's damp not wet) to clean your dick head.

SINGAPORE - The Sats officer who fell sick after consuming food from popular restaurant Spize has died on Wednesday (Nov 14).

Mr Fadli Salleh, who was married with two young children, had been in critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Sengkang General Hospital (SKH) after he was one of 72 people who suffered gastroenteritis, allegedly after eating bento boxes prepared by Spize's River Valley outlet for an event last Tuesday.

The party was for a Deepavali celebration organised by security company Brink's Singapore and held on its premises at Kaki Bukit.

Mr Fadli attended the gathering as he was deployed to Brink's Singapore, though the event itself did not involve Sats.

A Sats spokesman said: "We are providing support to the family during this sad and difficult time. Please approach Brinks if you have further questions."

Brinks offered its condolences to Mr Fadli's family and said it it was "deeply saddened" that an employee of its business partner died.

"He was a loyal colleague with a strong work ethic and dedication to serving our customers and his colleagues. We will miss him," said a Brinks spokesman.

"We will keep working closely with the public health authorities as they investigate the cause of the illness."

As of 10pm on Wednesday, nine people are still hospitalised but their conditions are stable, said the Ministry of Health (MOH), adding that 36 people have been discharged.

The cause of Mr Fadli's death is pending as it has been classified as a coroner’s case, the ministry said.

A joint statement by the National Environment Agency (NEA), MOH and Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority last Friday said the authorities were notified of the cases last Wednesday and they conducted a joint investigation that day.

Spize's 409 River Valley Road branch's licence was suspended at 7pm that evening.

The statement added that they were investigating several cases of gastroenteritis traced to the consumption of food prepared at the restaurant.

"Several hygiene lapses were observed, including leaving ready-to-eat food uncovered in a chiller, not providing soap for hand washing (soap dispenser was faulty) and slotting knives for preparing ready-to-eat food in the gap between the food preparation tables," said the statement.

SINGAPORE (THE NEW PAPER) - The number of people hospitalised after eating food from Spize has more than doubled since the news broke last Friday (Nov 9).

As of noon on Tuesday, 69 people have been affected, with 46 of them having been hospitalised.

It was previously reported that 49 people were affected with 21 hospitalised.

In a statement to The New Paper on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said 26 of those hospitalised have been discharged. It added that one person remains in the intensive care unit (ICU) while the others are recovering.

TNP reported on Tuesday that a Sats Singapore officer, who is in the ICU, is in a critical condition with his lungs and kidneys affected.

The Spize outlet at 409 River Valley Road had supplied 88 bento sets to Brink's Singapore for Deepavali celebrations on Nov 6.

The Sats officer ate the catered food as he was deployed to Brink's Singapore at the time.

A joint statement by the National Environment Agency (NEA), MOH and Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority last Friday said the authorities were notified of the cases on Nov 7 and they conducted a joint investigation that day.

The outlet's licence was then suspended and will remain so until NEA is satisfied that the public health risks have been addressed.

Numerous attempts by TNP to contact Mr Haresh Sabnani, 41, the co-owner of Spize, have been unsuccessful.
