Why hasn't recurring problem of congestion at land checkpoints been solved?

It is heartening to know that Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam is taking a keen interest in the congestion problem (Checkpoint officers working their guts out: Shanmugam; Dec 28). I also appreciate the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers for their hard work.

As Mr Shanmugam noted, such congestion has occurred in previous years. During non-holiday seasons, congestion at the land checkpoints has also been the norm for years.

It seems that manpower shortage is the root cause of the problem.

As this has been a problem for years, it is hard to understand why it has not been solved for so long.

Perhaps the ICA can let the public, especially the users of these checkpoints, know what measures it has taken over the years to alleviate the manpower shortage.

Such problems do not seem to exist at the air and sea checkpoints, where immigration processing is a breeze compared with the land checkpoints.

It is very frustrating for land checkpoint users to see unmanned booths while they are stuck waiting for their turn.

Perhaps the ICA can consider employing some excess staff permanently to deal with increased demand in times of congestion.

The additional cost can probably be justified by the amount of fuel saved and the air pollution avoided.

Mismanagement by MHA and ICA is the root cause of the problem.

The buck stops at Shanmugam
No it’s due to the volume of cars combined with mudlander poor upbringing queue cutting behavior and car breakdown due to their cheap Charlie lack of car maintenance mentality. We can’t be expanding staff intake and lanes to cater for these problems caused by foreigners.

SINGAPORE: Taiwanese auxiliary police officers (APOs) began their deployment at land checkpoints on Friday (Jan 12), the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said in response to queries from Channel NewsAsia.
On Monday, the Minister of Home Affairs K Shanmugam said in a written response to a Parliamentary question that Taiwanese APOs would be deployed at land checkpoints given the lack of Singaporean APOs to meet projected demand over the next few years.

Previously, it was a requirement that only Singaporean APOs could be deployed at land checkpoints.
"Operation needs are growing significantly, everywhere, including our checkpoints. Visitor numbers are growing and at the same time, the threats of terrorism have risen substantially," said Mr Shanmugam, who is also the Minister of Law, in his reply.
Taiwan was first explored as a possible source for APOs in late 2016, as private security firms such as AETOS and Certis Cisco found it difficult to recruit APOs from Singapore or Malaysia.
APOs are deployed for a range of security functions, including protecting sensitive installations and providing security at major events.

ICA should pay their officers by the number of passports they process...instead of a regular monthly salary.

Liddat...every ICA officer volunteer open counter every holiday and chop fast fast.
For Singkieland most Singkies go through automatic gate. So the processing time is fast for those that take bus. The problem is on the m&d side the CIQ has less than 20 counters for more than 300k ppl. So how to process fast? N of course Singkieland has up the customs check so u will have to prepare for a longer wait.

Frustrating wait: Vehicles heading into the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration, Quarantine Complex via the Eastern Dispersal Link in Johor are seen caught in the traffic backlog.
JOHOR BARU: Thousands of people travelling between Singapore and Johor Baru via the Causeway and Second Link were left simmering in frustration after being caught in a traffic backlog, which is believed to have started since 2am yesterday.
Among those affected was senior engineer Azham Hamzah, 39, who stuck for about four hours was on his way to work from Skudai to Singapore.

“Normally, it would take about one-and-half hours to two hours to go across the border.
“The immigration counters in both Singapore and Johor checkpoints open as usual in terms of number but the security checks feel longer and tighter than usual,” he said, adding the school holidays may also be a contributing factor.

Another motorist going through the ordeal was aviation screening officer, Darvintharan Nair, 29, who has been working in Singapore for over two years.
“I left home as early as 6am, hoping that I will be able to reach my office by 9am, but ended up arriving at about 10.30am.
“I understand that the nature of the traffic here has always been unpredictable, but this time it is unusually slower,” he said.
He hopes traffic will return to normal today.
Taxi drivers complained that the situation caused some of them to lose customers.
Malaysian taxi driver Muhammad Jaafar Ali said he reached Singapore at about 6am despite leaving from Larkin Sentral at 2am.
“Although this is not the first time we have experienced such bad traffic congestion, this is definitely one of the worst in 2018.
“Other drivers told me that some of the passengers who go to work by taxi every day even called in sick because it is impossible for them to reach work on time,” he said.
Johor Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Supt Razak Md Said said security checks at Singapore’s checkpoints had been tightened.
“We do not know when they started increasing security checks but the traffic congestion became apparent since this morning,” he said when contacted.
Supt Razak advised motorists to follow traffic rules for their own safety and not aggravate the situation.

Been talking about tat since the 80s...will need another 69 years before improvements are made
It would be interesting to see how property prices react in northern Singapore like woodlands, Admiralty and Yishun once the MRT to Johore is built...

Why worry when it's 69 years away? I will be dead by than. N those 3 areas u mentioned. The prices have always been crap. If singkieland has a slum. It will be those areas so I doubt the prices will improve unless there is no more land
