I was in the old WP and I still have contacts with some in the new WP. I have also served time for my beliefs. So I can tell you that beyond their carefully cultivated public image of being "bullied" and "persecuted", Low Thia Khiang and Sylvia Lim are hardly honest nor angels. They are "bullies" themselves. They are not clean. Check with past and current WP cadres if you do not believe me. Yes, they still talk although they have been threatened not to and are restrained by these two clowns.

If at all, these two have been allowed to get away with many things because the PAP needed them to be around as a pseudo-opposition. Low Thia Khiang, especially, was LKY's favourite blue-eyed boy. He would have been jailed or bankrupted 25 years ago had he not been LKY's blue-eyed boy and a useful idiot who could do the opposition in. Many of my older WP colleagues still believe him to be a PAP mole sent in to destroy the WP. Such was/is the damage he has done to the genuine opposition.

There are no good men or women with political power. You left because your beliefs and good soul cannot come to terms with reality, and good for you. Please understand that the commoners can only find refuge, paying less protection money only when politicians are fighting. In the meantime lets sit back and let the event play out for the world to see what singapore politics can achieve.

Singapore opposition leaders appeal for help to stave off bankruptcy

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Leaders of Singapore’s only parliamentary opposition party have appealed to supporters for financial help, saying they face the risk of bankruptcy as costs mount in civil cases they are fighting.

The three officials are being sued by two town councils controlled by the party between 2011 and 2015 for more than S$30 million ($21.7 million) in damages. The councils say the trio failed in their fiduciary duties - claims the defendants say are unfounded.

The three can lose their parliamentary seats if declared bankrupt, which will cut the party’s seats to six in the 100 -seat assembly dominated by the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP).

“We need financial resources to fight the legal battle and to deal with the prospect of being made a bankrupt,” party chief Pritam Singh, former leader Low Thia Khiang, and party chair Sylvia Lim said in a joint post on a website set up to appeal for support in their case.

They said they have used personal savings and financial support from friends to pay almost S$600,000 in legal fees and will continue to fight the claims against them.

Singh took to the witness stand on Thursday in the hearing, which is expected to continue until early November.

The trio are being sued in separate cases by the town councils for wrongful payments made to companies. In one of the cases, audit reports by accounting firm KPMG said it had found “pervasive” management failures.

Town councils manage public housing developments, including any shops and community services within them.

Singapore politics has long been dominated by the PAP, which has won all the elections since the island’s independence in 1965 with significant majorities. The next general election is due by early 2021.

“We have acted in good faith, and did what we believed to be in the best interests of our residents and the Town Council,” the Workers’ Party leaders said in the post.

Has the wind been knocked out of the Opposition?
Augustine Low 2018-10-25 Commentaries

When Singapore’s biggest and most successful Opposition party has to resort to making a public appeal for money to pay for legal battles and “deal with the prospect” of bankruptcy, you know they are in dire straits.

It would be no surprise though if Singaporeans, by and large, still go about their lives thinking what happens to the Opposition is not of their concern, that other people’s problems are not their problems.

There are five questions we need to ask.

The first obvious question: Is this what fixing the Opposition looks like?

Remember these words uttered by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in 2006: “Right now we have Low Thia Khiang, Chiam See Tong and Steve Chia. We can deal with them. Suppose you had 10, 15, 20 Opposition members in Parliament. Instead of spending my time thinking what is the right policy for Singapore, I’m going to spend all my time thinking what’s the right way to fix them, to buy my supporters votes, how can I solve this week’s problem and forget about next year’s challenges?”

Fast forward 2011, when the WP captured Aljunied GRC – a major coup – and thus beget the saga of the town council woes culminating in the current court case.

But then, can anyone or any party fix the WP such that it ends up committing missteps?

So the follow-up question: Did the WP let its guard down?

Caught in the euphoria of winning a GRC, the WP could have felt it was on a roll and could do no wrong.

If there’s one thing you cannot afford to do when you are up against the might of the People’s Action party, it is to blink and let your guard down. The PAP will bite hard and ensure there are consequences and a price to be paid.

The next question that comes to mind: Could the same fate befall PAP town councillors?

To try and imagine a scenario where a PAP town council ends up suing its own town councillors and Members of Parliament is just unthinkable and unimaginable.

If you think the PAP wouldn’t be so foolish and so reckless as to commit harakiri, you are not alone.

So then, we have to ask: Is this nothing more than the PAP vs the WP?

The plaintiffs suing the WP town councillors are Aljunied-Hougang Town Council and Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council.

So on paper at least, it’s got nothing to do with the PAP.

But if you take this at face value, then you are the sort who will buy anything from a snake oil salesman.

Let’s not forget too that the man in the front and centre of the trial – Senior Counsel Davinder Singh – is a former PAP MP who has triumphed in numerous legal battles for Lee Kuan Yew and PM Lee, against Opposition politicians like Tang Liang Hong, Chee Soon Juan and Roy Ngerng, and foreign media outlets like The Economist, Bloomberg and New York Times.

Which bring us to the fifth and final question: Isn’t it scary when we start to think who in their right mind would want to be an Opposition politician?

Given that the burden is so heavy and the price so high, to be in the Opposition camp is to live life on a cliff’s edge. The reality is that even WP MPs, known to be moderate and disciplined politicians, have ended up in hot soup.

Unless Singaporeans ditch their apathy and care to exercise their power as citizens, they will find that one day there is no one left to listen and give them voice. And their problems will be theirs alone because no one is left to fight for them.

I would have the same historical baggage too.

It's not simply an issue of "historical baggage" but a continuing problem to this day. JBJ brought him into WP in 1982. Thirteen years later in 2001, he stabbed JBJ in the back and took over as Secretary-General. For 17 years as SG until April 2018, he, and later, his sidekick, Sylvia Lim, created a dictatorial culture of fear and subservience within the WP. They were no nonsense to the file and ranks within the WP, running the WP like their personal fiefdom where the cadres and members were nothing more than their personal rubber stamps. Those who spoke up were sidelined, ostracized or eventually forced to leave.

Notwithstanding their no-nonsense gungho-ness to the rank and file, they were all obsequious, meek and mild when it came to the PAP, displaying a disgraceful and shameless servility towards the PAP.

For those who regularly condemn the PAP and see the WP as their saviour who will lead them to the promised land which is free of the PAP incompetence, MRT breakdowns, 99 year leasehold flats, rising medical costs, increase in CPF withdrawal age, increased cost of living, overpopulation, etc, here's a dose of harsh reality - all in Low Thia Khiang's very own words:

"I think we have a competent Government... we need to allow time for the Government to work, and I hope, eventually, the policies will take effect on the ground, people's lives will be improved and we have a better Singapore." Low Thia Khiang, "By-election win not sign of trend for GE: Low", 147th Prostitute Press, 28 January 2013

I hope the competent Government sends the WP oppies to jail.

There are 6 oppie MP seats that should go to more deserving PAP cadres who have been doing free grassroots work for years.

Through his hard-line approach, what did jbj achieve for opposition politics in the end? An almost total domination of Pap in Parliament for 3 decades?

What did his benevolent leadership feature? Doctor professor zeng guo yuan running as an election candidate? Op spectrum almost crippling the party?

The teochew guy and his laukwaybu sidekick avoided all these pitfalls by doing the opposite of what jbj would have done. We can always accuse politicians of selling out when we don't agree with them.
