Forum: Reset needed at all levels of Singapore football

Feb 22, 2022

Singapore's Under-23 football team losing to the teams from Thailand and Vietnam in the ongoing Asean Football Federation's Under-23 Championship is not surprising (Virus-hit S'pore beaten by Thais, Feb 17).
There is a huge systemic failure at all levels of Singapore football, from the Under-16 level right up to the senior team.
From the frequent whippings that our teams have been receiving from other Asian teams for the last 10 years or so, it can be seen that something is clearly not right.
Many times, excuses have been given whenever our teams lost, without doing in-depth analysis of what went wrong with our teams and what went right with other teams, especially the Thais and Vietnamese who are clearly many levels above us.
If we refuse to acknowledge the weaknesses of our football teams, then we will never be able to devise ways to improve.
I suggest that a total reset be done of our football, at both the strategic and grassroots levels. Stakeholders should also be engaged. There are many passionate people and fans out there - as evidenced by the keen contest during the first-ever Football Association of Singapore (FAS) election in 2017 - whom FAS can tap for their views and expertise.
The question now is: Would FAS be willing to engage those with bold ideas?

The real elephant in the room is the very Administration of football itself.
Until there is passion at the top, anything else we do is a waster of time.

The Goal 2010 dream was discarded in June 2004 by then-FAS president Ho Peng Kee, who revised the association's focus towards becoming one of Asia's top 10 sides within five years. He said that Goal 2010 became "counter-productive as we measured everything against that slogan".
Lol how many countries are there in Asia? To be one of Top 10 ….. in Asia? That’s like getting 3rd in a class of 5 students.

Singapore is currently ranked 34th among the Asian countries. To be in the top 10 would be quite a good achievement. LOL.
But then again, Singapore should not have fallen to such a lowly position in the first place (pun). During the heydays, Singapore was indeed among the top 10 Asian soccer countries.

SEA Games: Singapore footballers on the brink after 5-0 thumping by Thailand

SINGAPORE - National Under-23 coach Nazri Nasir apologised to Singapore football fans after his charges were thumped 5-0 by Thailand in their SEA Games Group B clash at the Thien Truong Stadium in Nam Dinh on Monday (May 9) night.
The result left the team’s hopes of a medal at the Hanoi SEA Games hanging by a thread.
They must now beat Malaysia and Cambodia in their remaining games and hope other results go their way, in order to claim one of the top two spots in the group and progress into the semi-finals.
If they fail, this would mark the fourth straight edition of the SEA Games where Singapore have suffered a group-stage exit.
“I want to say sorry to the fans back home,” Nazri told The Straits Times after the game.
“Tonight’s result is not ideal but we need (the fans’) support now more than ever for the next two crucial games. We are still in this and knowing that you guys are behind us will give us the extra boost.”
The former national skipper, 51, made no excuses for the heavy defeat and admitted that poor concentration led to his team’s downfall.

He added: “The 5-0 (scoreline) is painful, it makes me sad, but we can’t mourn it and do much about it any more.
“Whether 1-0 or 5-0, a loss is a loss. But we are still in the tournament, and so our next two matches are do-or-die games.”
Thailand scored their opening goal at the end of a cagey first half, and it was ex-Singapore youth international Ben Davis who made the impact for them.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder earned a penalty with seconds left in the half after he was brought down in the box by Syahrul Sazali, and dusted himself off to send goalkeeper Zaiful Nizam the wrong way.
Davis, born in Phuket to a Thai mother and an English father, had moved to Singapore with his family at age five before becoming a citizen four years later. He represented the Republic up to the Under-19 level and was even called up for the senior Lions squad once but did not earn a cap.
But he opted to switch his international football allegiance to his country of birth, after he defaulted his national service obligations in 2019, following his signing for English club Fulham. He is now with English third-tier club Oxford United.
After Davis’ goal put the Thais in the driver’s seat, a shambolic start to the second half put paid to Singapore’s hopes of a comeback.

They conceded twice within six minutes of the restart, first after Harhys Stewart turned the ball into his own net off Worachit Kanitsribampen’s low cross in the 47th minute, before Ekanit Panya slammed the ball in from close range after a melee in the 51st.
Ekanit, one of five players in the Thai starting XI with senior caps – Singapore had three – grabbed his second in the 67th minute with a cool finish off a counter attack.
Korawich Tasa scored the Thais’ fifth nine minutes before the end with another close-range finish, with the Republic never truly threatening Thai goalkeeper Kawin Thamsatchanan throughout the game.
The result left Singapore at the bottom of Group B after two games.
They had opened their campaign with a 2-2 draw with Laos last Saturday, having trailed 2-0 for most of the game.
Nazri’s team will now face an uphill battle when they play Cambodia tomorrow and Malaysia on Saturday.
Cambodia trounced Laos 4-1 in the other Group B match played earlier yesterday, while Malaysia had beaten Thailand 2-1 in their Games’ opener last Saturday.

These apologies are getting ridiculous. Still pretending that we can make it - with two good results
and other teams play according to plans to accommodate us?

Punctured after 70 minutes!!

Forum: Lions' fitness levels can be improved with committed efforts

June 7, 2022

Lions coach Takayuki Nishigaya has just confirmed what many in local football circles have known for years - the fitness levels of Singapore footballers are nowhere near the minimum standards required to last a proper 90-minute match (Nishigaya keeps faith, June 3).
There was evidence of this during the recent SEA Games in Hanoi, when I could see the team struggling around the 70-minute mark against Thailand.
It is not rocket science to figure out that Asian teams like Japan, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam can use their superior fitness levels to dish out eye-pleasing football and, more importantly, make up for what they lack in skill when they play against higher-level opponents from the rest of the world.
This leads to the question of why our professional footballers have not put in the effort to improve their fitness levels. While there is a limit to how much a player can improve other aspects of his game like skill and tactical awareness, surely he can enhance his fitness levels with more committed efforts.
Perhaps the Football Association of Singapore and Singapore Premier League club administrators could consider sending national team footballers for regular fitness and endurance training sessions.

Wait till they play a cup game, reach 120 minutes after extra time and then go to penalty shootouts.

The shit quality of the penalty kicks and the public humiliation will be fantastic to see.

Their lack of fitness has been a foreever theme of the footballers.
Rady was famously shocked by the length of time that they
spend hanging around coffee shops, which led him to say that
he has never seen footballers getting fitter and better by sitting
in coffeeshops.

They have no winning mentality. Anyone can show up for training. It's what they do after training that matters.

May be, the Singapore national footballers should review and study details of the training schedule of Cristiano Ronaldo.
