A young Filipina woman becomes the maid for a Singaporean family who needs plenty of help beyond cooking and cleaning in Ilo Ilo, a delicate comedy-drama that contains four nicely realiSed and empathetic characters. Making his feature directorial debut, Singaporean filmmaker Anthony Chen sidesteps mawkishness at every turn to deliver a small gem about how families learn to persevere during the toughest of times.

Singapore director Anthony Chen received a 15-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film festival after the world premiere of his debut feature film Ilo Ilo.

Set in Singapore in the 1990s, the 99-minute film chronicles the relationship between a young boy and his maid from Iloilo, a province in the Philippines.

The film is also in the running for the Caméra d'Or Award or Golden Camera Award - given to the best first feature in the Official Selection, the Director's Fortnight or International Critics' Week.

The winner will be announced on Sunday.

Local cinemas will screen the film later this year.
