Singapore Consumer Prices Rise More Than Expected In May
(RTTNews) - Singapore consumer prices rose 3.2% in May from the previous year, on account of higher costs of transport, housing and food, data from Department of Statistics showed Wednesday. Economists were expecting 3% increase. Excluding accommodation costs, the consumer price index moved up 4.3%.
Transport cost advanced 15% as a result of higher prices of cars and petrol. The 1.6% rise in housing cost was due to higher electricity and gas tariffs. Reflecting dearer prepared meals, vegetables, chilled meat, rice and other cereals as well as fresh seafood, food prices rose 1.3%.
Consumer prices were up 0.6% in May over April due to higher costs of transport and housing. Excluding accommodation costs, prices grew 0.6%.
