TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Relations between Taiwan and Singapore have reached a low point as the city state closed off high-level channels of communication with Taipei, a Taiwanese newspaper reported Saturday. The Chinese-language United Evening News said the damage to the relationship was caused by the unspecified behavior of Taiwanese diplomats in the Southeast Asian nation. The paper was unable to find out who did what to cause the breakdown, and diplomats in both countries were unwilling to discuss the matter, though sources said it was “the situation was very grave.”
One of the rumors quoted by the paper was that a diplomat sang Taiwan’s national anthem at a public event.
Taiwan and Singapore have no official diplomatic relations, but have been on friendly terms for a long time, with Singaporean military staff even receiving training on the island.
The latest cooling comes at the end of a year when the new nations were supposed to negotiate closer trading cooperation. Over the past two months, Taiwan tried several times to “unclog” the situation, but without success, the paper said.
Taipei reportedly wanted to send presidential adviser and former Foreign Minister Ding Mou-shih to Singapore. The city state said he was welcome as a tourist, but not if he came to discuss bilateral relations.
Attempts during a recent APEC summit in Hawaii to mend relations between the two forum members also came to nothing, according to the United Evening News.
Foreign Minister Timothy Yang told the paper Saturday that the most difficult point in the relationship was already over and that normal communication had resumed.

Taiwan's presidential campaign is heating up with the possibility of "anti-One China Policy" DPP swinging back into office. China's diplomat has already made firm reminder across the straits that any attempt to dis-recoginise the "One China Policy" will break all previously agreed diplomatic pacts and close the door to all possible future talks. Maybe this is the sensitive period and stay arm's length with Taiwan is the what Spore in adopting right now.

Or maybe is because Chiong (3X) Su was in town not too long recently and met with SG leaders........................ :D

Yeah, maybe China has issued a stern warning to Spore. Furthermore Su(3x) is from DPP.

This is very typical of the Singaporean mentality.

So KS and practical.

Perhaps the PAP should be reminded that the Taiwanese people were once Singapore's friends and that they helped contribute to Singapore's economy and nation-building back in the 70s and 80s, not to mention that the Taiwanese allowed Singapore to train there, when not many countries would.

Now that China is all powerful, it is so very easy for Singapore to ditch its old friend to kiss up to the big bully.

Have one got no shame?

With friends like this, who needs enemies?

This is so bullshit. The media has nothing better to do but to create new sensation out of nowhere?
