Local newspapers are chock full of stories of people who either are caned or deported for bad behavior.

Srsly, is this a joke? Singapore's annual population surplus for the past ten years was something like 200,000 per annum. If they are deporting lots of foreigners, they are bringing in at least 250,000 every year. KNN.

My first instinct was also to think that you’ll never see Singapore produce an iconic, quirky and visionary person who could change the world like Steve Jobs did.
But I quickly realized I was wrong.

After all, Singapore did produce Lee Kuan Yew himself — who, like Jobs, is iconic, quirky and visionary — and who successfully transformed this minor colonial outpost into the world’s wealthiest nation.

No one takes water gated Nixon seriously. in a different time and different place, LKY would be lynched and hung, while stones are throne at his body.

and the modern singapore system did not produce LKY. ironically, he was a product of the colonial post-war system - one that is vastly different from the system we live in today as witnessed by this half fuck writer Vardy. what an insightful piece on singapore afer a few days in country

You can be a country bumpkin or a beach bum in america and nobody will say anything because that is the life you choose.
You cannot do that in Singapore because you will need to pay for the debts that you will incur just living.
