SINGAPORE: Singapore has to respect the Romanian court's decision to accept former diplomat Silviu Ionescu's request to be released from judicial supervision, says a spokesman from Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
But MFA understands that the Romanian Prosecutors' Office is appealing against the decision.
The spokesman says the MFA will continue to monitor the situation and it expects the Romanian authorities to honour their assurances that justice will be served.
Ionescu's lawyer, Nelu Tasca, has earlier said that Ionescu will be released if prosecutors do not appeal by 3.30pm Friday Romanian time (9:30pm Friday Singapore time).
Ionescu had failed in an earlier attempt to be released from detention while he is on trial for two hit-and-run accidents in Singapore in December last year which claimed the life of a pedestrian.
Ionescu has denied responsibility. He will be in court again on November 17.
