Siglap

For orientation purpose.....This is a shot taken along Upper East Coast Road in the direction of Siglap Centre.

The row of old shop houses is now Crescendo Building (Health Partners Clinic, Royal Cafe etc) and the old corner shop behind the row is Soy Eu Tua. This old coffee shop at the Junction of Upper East Coast Road and Jalan Tua Kong is where the famous Lau Lim Jalan Tua Kong Mee Pok used to be before he shifted to his current shop in Simpang Bedok Festival Market. Soy Eu Tua is still around and very popular with residents. The "signature stall" here now is Beijing Chicken Rice

Which hill was that? Up Fidelio Street or Siglap Drive?

If you were around this area in the 60s (probably not) then you may remember the many hills that were demolished to fill in the sea as part of the Marine Parade reclamation. e.g. this hill formerly in Woo Mun Chew Road area (Upper East Coast Road)

Many thanks for the old pics of Siglap.. Wow, a shophouse at Woo Mun Chew Rd used to have this Indian barber shop.. Prataman was said to be their regular customer..

Still around. Was forced to move across the street after the landlord finally managed to evict them. They were paying 1950s rent rates due to the rent control act.

Ahh yes.. Remember now, they had moved their shop across the road.. There's also a pub besides the barber shop..

What a coincidence ! I was about to post pictures of some old shops at junction of Upper East Coast Road and Woo Mun Chew Road including a photo of Five Star Barber. From your update, this is the old Mama Barber shop that Prata Man went. The Barber Shop is still around but has shifted directly across the road.

Which hill was that? Up Fidelio Street or Siglap Drive?

I rode from my home in Tanjong Rhu along Meyer Road, Amber Road, East Coast Road, up Siglap Hill.... then a screaming descent down Fidelio Street and up again.. then back along what has now become New Upper Changi Road and Frankel Ave back to East Coast Road and then home again.

Similar angle of Siglap Market but photo taken in early 1960s. Siglap has certainty come a long way since then ....

I ain't kidding when I earlier posted that Old Fart came to Siglap on three occasions to campaign in the 1959 GE and
at the rallies he said the roads in Frankel Estate were not beh-chia-lor (asphalt roads), but gu-chia-lor.

An familiar landmark from yesteryear - Siglap Market. Demolished to make way for the current Siglap Centre

The brothel was located on the upper floor of that light green building. The ground floor unit below the brothel was Tong Ah kopi-tiam.

The row of old shops (next to Woo Mon Chew Road and Upper East Coast Road junction) is still standing and hopefully will remain so as they are a nostalgic reminder of old Siglap and Singapore in general before the wrecking balls came and cleaned up all the old buildings.

This is a shot of the corner unit of the shop (2 shops away from Prataman's Barber Shop). It is still standing and painted lime green in recent times by a short lived Durian Shop. Have seen some renovations at the shop but still vacant for now.

See how quiet and peaceful Upper East Coast Road was back in the 1960s

Does that row of shop houses belong to same owner. See the post above for a shot of that row of shop houses. If single owner, chances are he will want to sell the valuable land to developers for yet another new complex soon

The late Susan Lim (The Crescendos) was living in the Woo Mon Chew Rd vicinity.

I've a feeling the building is named Crescendo in memory of Susan Lim.

ahhh...woo mon chew road. Formerly dist 16...now 15.

Used to know a St Pat's guy...Tho Sai Tham who used to stay in one of the shophouses near wmc road. This was around 1968.

This song made it to the top of the chart for a number of weeks in S'pore, Sarawak, Sabah and Malaya.

Ahh yes.. The building is now painted in green.. Used to be a durian shop called Durina Cafe if I'm not mistaken.. You're right.. Its a vacant now since its undergoin renovations.. Hope they change the colour of the building.. Seems bit strange to have the building being painted green.. If memory served me right, there used to be an Indian Muslim frame making shop nearby..

The developer must have been fan or a relative. Or it could be a coincidence as not many younger Singaporeans would have heard of The Crescendos

There was also a band "The Siglap Five". They must have been from this area too :p
