Some members of the public seem to be asking a Member of Parliament (MP) to help ban the Channel 8, 9pm drama serial, "Love Thy Neighbour".
Last night, MP for Tampines GRC, Baey Yam Keng, posted a comment on Facebook about feedback that the drama "Love Thy Neighbour" on Channel 8 should be banned.
The MP's post immediately sparked off a flurry of comments from netizens.
A netizen, "Dave Koh" said that the drama serial had at its debut episode, included a lengthy 35-minute segment narrating the story of a Singaporean household attempting to cheat their neighbours, a Malaysian couple who had crossed the causeway to make a living here in Singapore.
"Dave Koh" felt that this portrays a negative image of Singaporeans.
Another netizen, "Whatderhell" share the same sentiments. He feels that the drama serial places too much emphasis on the need for Singaporeans to embrace and "love their (new migrant) neighbours".
However, the MP feels that there is no need to pull the drama off air.
He told Lianhe Wanbao that although he hasn't managed to follow the serial, he believes it is not necessary to discontinue airing it as the serial has barely begun and the plot and characters have yet to properly develop.
MP Baey added that if the serial is not well received by the public, viewership ratings will be affected and the issue will eventurally be brought to Mediacorp's attention.
Some netizens however, have a rather positive view of the drama serial. They feel that the serial reflects the reality of the recent influx of foreign talent, which many feel is a threat to the livelihood and jobs of Singaporeans.
