Cool cats! Siberian tigers beat the heat by licking huge block of ice

By ANNA EDWARDS PUBLISHED: 01:25 GMT, 15 August 2013 | UPDATED: 01:25 GMT, 15 August 2013

These big cats are traditionally used to freezing and snowy conditions in Russia. But as temperatures soared in China, these Siberian tigers knew how to stay cool in the weather - by licking a huge ice block. The animals had their own version of an ice lolly in Guaipo Siberian Tiger Park in Shenyang, in northeast China's Liaoning province.

However, the breed is under threat from poachers and there are now less than 350 left in the wild

Temperatures have reached or exceeded 35 degrees Celsius for an average of 25.3 days in eight provinces and municipalities since July 1.

This has marked the greatest number of hot days recorded during the period since 1961, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) said.

The Siberian tiger once roamed across northern Asian. However, they now survive in a relatively small area in the far east of Russian Siberia, north of Vladivostok.

It is the only tiger that survives most of the year in the snow - so the fierce heat would be an unusual experience for them

They are now an endangered animal, and fiercely protected in parks like the one in north east China.

The Siberian tiger is the largest cat in the world. It preys on deer, wild boar and grizzly bears. It is the only tiger that survives most of the year in the snow. Despite its light orange coat and black stripes, it is difficult to spot, even against a white backdrop.

However, the breed is under threat from poachers and there are now less than 350 left in the wild.

A Siberian tiger can fetch as much as £30,000 on the black market.

The bones are sold for Chinese medicine and the skin is hung in homes as a status symbol.
