To celebrate the two medals won by Singapore's women table tennis team, Singapore Airlines (SIA) decided to give them a surprise last night.

As the team were boarding their flight, the airline upgraded their economy-class seats to business class, reported Shin Min Daily News.

The paddlers Feng Tianwei, Li Jiawei and Wang Yuegu were at London's Heathrow Airport to catch their flight back home together with Table Tennis Association President Dr Lee Bee Wah and deputy women's head coach Jing Junhong on Thursday.

does no matter , the empty first class seats are there so they can move anyone to these empty seats if they wanted to.

they had done more complicated upgrading before , like turning it into a clinic.

SIA is for good publicity, or at least what they think is good publicity.
In your case last time, it's probably because economy is over-booked and there are m-t seats in business.
Even if there are m-t seats in business and economy is full but not over-booked, they won't normally upgrade.
Those they upgrade will normally be those who fly frequently or those with premium/priority cards, and this will only happen if economy is over-booked or if the passenger with priority status requests.
