SIA could lose $50m
By Karamjit Kaur, Aviation Correspondent

THE six-day disruption to Singapore Airlines' Europe operations following airport closures there could cost the carrier $50 million.

The bulk of this is from revenue opportunity lost as a result of flight cancellations and disruptions, the airline said in making its estimate yesterday.

Another $10 million will go towards paying for hotel rooms and meals, as well as other such expenses, for the thousands of travellers stranded at foreign airports after much of Europe's airspace was closed last Thursday.

SIA is not the only carrier stung by the flight cancellations.

With flights to and from Europe accounting for about 15 per cent of their total passenger revenue, major Asian carriers are collectively expected to lose as much as US$40 million (S$55 million) a day because of the service disruptions, the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines said on Tuesday.

SIA, Cathay Pacific and Qantas are among the group's 17 members.
