Singapore Airlines has been revealed as the buyer of new-generation Boeing widebody planes worth US$13.8 billion ($19.82b).

The order, previously attributed to an unidentified customer, is for 20 777-9s, an aircraft that is still being developed, and 19 stretched Dreamliners, the 787-10s that is due to enter service with airlines next year.

The airline will have got a discount to the list price released, but Boeing says the value of the transaction would sustain thousands of United States suppliers and more than 70,000 direct and indirect US jobs.

The airline also has options for 12 more planes: six of each type.

It is pretty easy to please Trump. All PM Lee had to do was to mention that Singapore buys stuff from America. America also had a trade surplus with Singapore which no doubt Trump will be please with.

People are aware that to to get an invitation to the White House is to make big purchase or investment that spells jobs for Americans. Trump and the White House are desperate for any opportunity to say that he is creating jobs for Americans. Najib and Singapore both did it with their Boeing purchases. In Najib's case it was obvious that the Boeing purchase was not in MAS plans and led to the resignation of their CEO.

It remains to be seen if the SIA was forced to make big purchase for the PM to score a White House visit or it was an opportunity to get the invite.

Truly sad to see a great country selling its White House visits in such a manner,

don't be stupid. this deal was already in the making before trump got elected. it requires a year for bids to be evaluated, selection to be finalized, requirements and specs to be discussed, factory visits to be made, pricing and commercial terms to be negotiated, etc. because mindef is delaying decision on the f35 purchase, the next big item on the books is the boeing purchase. sia is also buying planes from airbus at around the same time. they have been dragging their feet on the dreamliner for at least 2 years until boeing relents on a new version for sia through the bid process.

Sia is truly farked, the industry is dumping larger planes for smaller fuel efficient ones.

I won’t be surprised that his wife forced it on SIA to score the invite. For SIA leadership, they know the lag in delivery will mask memory.

Credit to the recently departed MAS CEO, he dumped a National Carrier to go back to a budget airline. And he sent his notice within days of Najib’s return. Somethings are not worth it.
