Yesterday, I met some FTs who are semi-professional working in Singapore. While they do not want to take side over an obviously Singapore affair, they were wondering what's the big issue over the Presidential Election. They volunteered some comments.
To them it was pretty obvious - you have a very strong contender among the four who has proven himself over many years to be intelligent, capable, honest, and has proven to have the country's interest and people in mind - some called it paternalistic. Why should Singaporeans even want to consider voting for someone who has little experience in the governance of the country, or in looking after its huge national reserves? Have the people become so complacent that they are willing to toy, and risk, with their future - just because some of their personal interests and expectations have not momentarily been met?
Why are some Singaporeans bickering over the candidates? They wonder why some Singaporeans are willing to cut their own nose to spike their face. It appears that their respect for Singaporeans is eroded.
Should we let the FTs laugh at us? Let's show them and the world that Singaporeans are mature and ready to be citizens of the world. Vote wisely, vote for the future.
