2) Economic Superpower - China's GDP will overtake that of the US within the next 10 to 15 years. Its economy is growing at 10% which is 3 times that of the US.

China will be the world's largest economy which means it consumes and exports the largest chunk of the global economy - that is definate influence.

We can already see the country's impact on global economy. EU looked to China to help stabalize its debt market. The head of central bank of china is closely watched for what he says. Why would people care? Because what the central bank of china does has great impact on global financial markets - that is influence. Fast forward 15 years and they will be even more powerful.

This does not mean that China will be dominant like the way the US was. The US has not gotten smaller, it is just that the world economy has gotten larger. The GDP size between number 1 and 2 is small.

Methinks you overestimate China's influence. The measure of GDP is a factor. Others include political, military influences in the International Political Economy. In this regard China is the poor cousin of America. The overall size of China's economy will eventually overtake America but its per capita is a fraction of the US's which other will argue is the bigger of economic influences as China will eventually need to transverse from a production to a consumption based economy.

China's economy will of course continue to grow faster than the US as long as the Chinese can maintain the Yuan at such low levels keeping the economy production based. Once the Chinese begin to allow Yuan strength, the Chinese people will become consumers and economic growth will slow. The stellar economic performance is not universally shared among its citizens as true wealth has not transferred across the spectrum. Only a few in China have accumulated wealth.

2011, 2012 will be very bell weather years for China as inflation and other structural issues are set to cripple the Chinese economy. We dont think China can get effective control of its inflation and will have no choice but to allow the Yuan to increase to avoid a catastrophe. We can see this in recent overtures to the EU as the Chinese are supporting the EU simply because the EU is China's largest export market and a collapse of its currency would hasten the rise of the Yuan. China needs a stable US and Euro to continue artificially undervaluing the Yuan and export to to survive. In essence Trichet and Bernanke have been printing currency to force inflation in its own economies and export it to China while China continues to throw cheap money back to the mature economies of the EU and the US.

Once the Chinese allow the Yuan to increase, exports will sharply decrease while American factories begin to ramp up production once again. Look for American exports to continue to rise as insourcing back to the US is the new paradigm shift this decade. We will see more Chinese manufacturers begin to outsource which has already begun and expect Chinese manufacturing to be radically different in 2020.

China has so far never alluded to or behaved as a world power willing to take on global initiatives and geopolitical housekeeping to further its interests. The recent North Korea standoff is a good example of how China is the unwilling power of the world who is being forced into global politics while they continue to expect the US to effectively manage world affairs.

PM LHL has given this correct msg.

China is set to challenge USA to be no.(1)economy,just like USSR, Japan did.He believes that China does have a slim chance,but not too sure.

Whilst I agree with PM LHL that Chins does have a slim chance to overtake USA as a no.(1) economic power,in terms of GDP,I also think that both USA and Red China are running on unsustaintable course,and I am very sure that USA may bring the whole world down with it.

In my humble opinion,the only country which has a sustainable economic model is united state of Germany(USG),after the world economy collapse,there is a strong possibility of USG picking up the pieces and evolve from a Greater German Area into a United State of Europe(USE) which will rule the world.USA will remain the second power,back to the old day when USA play catching up to the British Empire.

I am only sure about China to be in the top four in terms of GDP

It always cracks me up.
