Former Brazilian star Zico has been appointed as the new coach of Iraq's national football team.

The 58-year-old, who starred for Brazil at the 1978, 1982 and 1986 World Cups, was most recently in charge of Greek team Olympiacos.

He also has previous managerial experience with the Japanese national side, who he led to the 2006 World Cup in Germany, along with stints at Turkish outfit Fenerbahce and Russian club CSKA Moscow.

The president of the Iraq Football Federation, Najih Hamoud, said the Brazilian has signed a one-year deal.

"The deal with Zico is done and he started his work with our team," Hamoud said.

"We hope to see good results by Zico and our national team."

Zico's first game at the helm will be Iraq's World Cup qualifier with Jordan in Arbil on September 2.

Zico, one of the best players not part of a world cup winning squad...hailing from brazil no less.
Maybe he hopes to win it as a coach.

what's the shock ??? Zico was a great player.....................but lousy coach................

Here's what one of the greatest coaches in footballing history think about the relation (or lack of it) between playing ability and coaching ability:

"I never realised that in order to become a jockey you have to have been a horse first" - Arrigo Sacchi

Not a lousy coach, just a good coach. Won asian cup with japan and turkish league title too.

when he coached Japan, the team was disorganized and chaotic...................

under him, Japan beat S'pore 1-0 only...................Japan played like schoolboys................

lucky for them, S'pore played like kindergarten kids..............

A selected few actually managed to be both the jockey and the horse.......

That is your own opinion, which counts for little. Fact is he won the asian cup as japan coach. Fact is he won the turkish division one title as coach. Mind you, these are not kucing kurap trophy like the ASEAN cup.
