The Deception
Shankar claimed on his resume to hold a doctorate (Ph.D.) in epidemiology, to have graduated from India's top medical school at age 21, and to be a member of the prestigious Royal College of Physicians. In reality, the only genuine graduate credential he possessed from the United States was a Master’s degree in epidemiology from the University of North Carolina.

How He Was Caught

• The Employment: Shankar successfully used his falsified credentials to secure a teaching position at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine from 2005 to 2008.
• The Move to the US: He later moved to the United States on a "genius" visa, heavily supported by forged reference letters.
• The Exposure: His lies unraveled in 2012 when West Virginia University (WVU) handpicked him for a prestigious, endowed leadership position at their new School of Public Health. Routine pre-appointment background checks revealed that he did not hold a Ph.D. and that his purported achievements were entirely fabricated.
