Sheng Siong is making its debut in the Orchard area, with plans to open a new outlet at The Cathay this month. The supermarket’s Group CEO Lim Hock Chee shared two main reasons for expanding into the area.

According to a Shin Min Daily News reader, the basement level of The Cathay shopping mall along Handy Road is currently under renovation to welcome Sheng Siong as a new tenant.

Most people associate Sheng Siong with affordable prices and convenient neighbourhood locations. According to its website, the supermarket chain currently has 82 outlets across Singapore, mainly in heartland areas, with a few in industrial zones. This will be Sheng Siong’s first outlet in the Orchard shopping belt.

The Cathay had temporarily closed for renovations in February 2023 and began its soft reopening in late March this year, with most tenants being new. When reporters visited the site recently, a sign outside indicated that the supermarket would open in August. Through gaps in the doors, internal electrical works appeared mostly completed, and some shelving had already been moved in.

Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, Sheng Siong Group CEO Lim Hock Chee said the company previously operated a store at Tekka Mall (now known as Tekka Place) in Little India. After that outlet closed, many customers expressed hope that Sheng Siong would return to a central location.

“This time, we’re opening at The Cathay mainly because there was available space and the rent was reasonable.”
A Sheng Siong spokesperson added that the new outlet is expected to begin operations in late August.

“There are quite a number of residential units, including private homes, in the area surrounding The Cathay. We believe residents here have similar daily shopping needs, and we hope to better serve them through this new location.”
In response to media queries, The Cathay confirmed the supermarket will occupy nearly 6,500 square feet. “We warmly welcome Sheng Siong to The Cathay,” they said.

Nearby residents: Looking forward to it

Residents living nearby are excited about Sheng Siong’s upcoming opening.

Ng Ze Ying (transliteration), 26, an analyst who lives near Dhoby Ghaut, told reporters that she moved to the area two years ago due to work. Living in the Orchard district has naturally increased her cost of living.

“The nearest supermarket here is CS Fresh, which is more high-end and therefore pricier. If I shop online, I have to meet a minimum order for delivery, which is very inconvenient.”
Now that Sheng Siong is opening nearby, she said she’s really looking forward to it.

“Hopefully, prices will be more affordable, so I can save some money on everyday essentials.”
When the reporter spoke to other shoppers at the mall, most said they don’t live in the area and wouldn’t come here just to buy groceries. But if they were in the area and needed a quick drink or a couple of items, they’d be happy to stop by.

The Cathay needs Sheng Siong more than Sheng Siong needs The Cathay. :o-o::confused::roflmao:
