SINGAPORE- Ms Natt Haniff, 40, remembers writing to then-CEO of the zoo, Mr Bernard Harrison, "begging for a job".

"I'd just graduated and I desperately wanted to work at the zoo," the assistant corporate communications manager says.

There was only one reason. And that reason weighs about 3,300kg.

Ms Natt was in her teens when she first fell in love with Gambir, the Malaysia-born Asian elephant.

"It was in 1991 and my sister and I had ponteng (Malay for skipped) school to go to the zoo. That was when I met her. She was still being bottlefed and I got the chance to feed her," she says.

After graduating from the National University of Singapore, Ms Natt decided to work at the zoo to be close to her newfound love.

So Ms Natt volunteered: As a guide, then as an elephant volunteer, an education facilitator - in her words, it was "all ways and means to be part of the zoo fraternity".

"I was at the zoo practically every day, even during the weekends. The keepers asked me cheekily whether I even had a life outside," she says with a laugh, adding that she met her husband at the zoo when he was working there.

Then an opening in the corporate communications team came in 2007.

To work in a trade which is your hobby is the best:D

this only shows that there is no career and no future working in the zoo.
Imagine this: NUS graduate
Work in the zoo upon graduation.
now she is 40 and his title is only an assistant manager.

I played my first truant while breaking up with my love at toh tuck sec school !

What no career? she can become an Elephant when she reached her old age
become larger than life size.. that's her career path... Good!

It can also suggest that the zoo is one of the few places here that have not suffered rank or appointment inflation. Just look at any group of cops buying food at a food centre - most are some kind of sergeant; and banks have tons of vice-presidents.

Salaries more important than appointment. No point having high positions but with low pay.

Job satisfaction is more important than money. Some people like animals so they work in a zoo, bird park, pet shelters, vet clinics.

Not everyone is interested in fattening one's bank account or accumulating money simply for the sake of accumulating it.

That's much better than most of her Malay counterparts

are you sure? you are lim swee say tio boh?

he said cheap cheaper cheaperer

Your namecard might say you are an Sales Engineer despite the fact that you are actually a school dropout and drawing less than a qualified engineer. The fact is that you are just a glorified salesman, period.

It may make the employee feels important despite having a low salary. This ploy by companies is a known fact to exploit their workers.

Yeah. Fancy job titles are the last fig leaf of the underemployed. Refer to bus captains and landscape technicians.

please sell this idea to PAP.

Once, in between jobs, I applied for a job at the vet's cause I was sick of working with office bitches...but he did not dare to employ me even though I love animals so much...said I looked too dainty and was afraid I'll get hurt. Wtf?

Then, just to try something different, I went to interview for the police force. They also scared coz they did not know what to do with a woman like me.

So, no choice I went back to administrative work...Sad, I would have so loved to work with animals...maybe I should try the zoo again.
