Reserve Bank of New Zealand recently increased their interest rates while Australia is affected by a slew of bad economic numbers from China. Yesterday's China's Industrial Production came out lower than expected. AUD will continue to be affected by China, its biggest export market for its mining output and thus, will likely continue to be pressured until China decides to inject more liquidity into its own money market (which has been strained recently).

Kiwi, on the other hand, is not so dependent on China. It raised its OCR recently to curb inflation.

adding on, looking at the weekly and monthly chart of nzd/usd, it's a buy call. so the currency will stay strong for the rest of the month. unless, like what boss sam experiencing a typhoon, major calamity will cause it to depreciate a bit.

What about the outlook for the rest of the year?
Their election in Sept 2014, could it be an influence too?
On the other hand, it was the natural disaster (Christchurch earthquake) that add on demand for construction industry, other than immigrants demand.

if john key from opposition wins no problem, if others win, will cause some instability and currency will depreciate. my gut feel is that he won't win.
note that the appreciation of NZD will cause investors to lose interest in investing in NZ and there will be less jobs.
