SINGAPORE – Two Italian swimmers were detained in Singapore over a suspected shoplifting incident at Changi Airport but were let off with a warning after diplomatic intervention allowed them to depart for home.

Chiara Tarantino, 22, and Benedetta Pilato, 20, were stopped by police before boarding their flight to Italy on Aug 14, having been caught by surveillance cameras taking perfumes from a store without paying, Italian media reported.

Hours-long questioning and investigations, including a strip search to check for more stolen goods, revealed that Tarantino had placed the products in Pilato’s suitcase.

According to Italian media outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, they were taken to a hotel shortly after the Italian Embassy in Singapore intervened on their behalf.

The pair were allowed to leave Singapore on Aug 18, after they were issued a warning and a repatriation document, having had their passports confiscated earlier.

The Italian Swimming Federation confirmed on Aug 29 that an incident regarding Tarantino and Pilato had occurred that required the intervention of the embassy in Singapore, but it was during a vacation period beyond federation-sanctioned activities.

The federation has not revealed any disciplinary measures it may take, saying only that it condemns the incident and will “carefully evaluate the matter”.

Tarantino and Pilato had participated in the World Aquatic Championships in Singapore, from July 11 to Aug 3. They then went on holiday in Bali with two other teammates before a scheduled return to Italy via a flight from Singapore.

Pilato issued a lengthy statement on Instagram on Aug 29 about her indirect involvement in the incident.

“Unfortunately, I was indirectly involved in an unpleasant incident handled by the Singapore airport authorities. I never intended to commit inappropriate acts,” wrote Pilato, who won a bronze in the 50m breaststroke event in Singapore.

“During days that should have been days of rest and mental relaxation, I instead went through particularly difficult times, far from home, beyond my control, but which have profoundly affected me on a human level.

“Fortunately, the matter was resolved within a few hours, without any implications, thanks in part to my utmost transparency with the airport authorities themselves. I immediately collaborated with the local authorities and with the full support of the embassy,” she wrote, adding that she had learnt important lessons about “individual responsibility, and the value of the people around me”.

According to swimming site SwimSwam, Tarantino, who has yet to comment on the incident, had taken part in the Singapore championships as a relay swimmer.

The Straits Times has contacted the Singapore Police Force and the Italian Embassy in Singapore for more information.

SINGAPORE – While in transit at Changi Airport, a dentist went to two stores to steal a luxury brand card holder and a bottle of perfume, which together cost more than $750. His engineer wife kept a lookout during one such incident.

American nationals Kapadia Husain Zoher, 35, and Kapadia Amatullah, 30, committed the offences while they were waiting for their connecting flight to India on June 23.

The married couple managed to board the Mumbai-bound plane but were caught before it took off.

On Aug 4, he was sentenced to 18 days’ jail after he pleaded guilty to a theft charge.

His wife, who pleaded guilty to a similar charge, was sentenced to a week in jail.

At around 5pm on June 23, Kapadia Husain Zoher entered a Louis Vuitton store at the airport’s Terminal 1, said State Prosecuting Officer (SPO) Ng Chee Wee.

The offender then took a card case holder worth around $600, slipped it into his pocket and left without paying for it.

CCTV cameras inside the store caught him committing the offence, the court heard.

The couple then went to Cosmetics & Perfumes by The Shilla at the airport’s Terminal 3 shortly before 5.40pm that day.

Kapadia Husain Zoher then took a bottle of Dior Sauvage perfume worth around $160 and slipped it into his pocket, while his wife acted as a lookout. They left the scene soon after without paying for it.

A CCTV camera inside the store also caught him stealing the item.

The police were notified and officers managed to establish his identity.

SPO Ng said: “(Kapadia Husain Zoher) had stolen the case holder out of greed. He had a habit of overspending, and he did not want to pay for the case holder.”

Both stolen items were recovered and returned to the respective stores.

For each count of theft, an offender can be jailed for up to seven years and fined.

SINGAPORE – In yet another case of in-flight theft, a man has been jailed for stealing a passenger’s debit cards and cash onboard a Scoot flight to Singapore.

Both the prosecution and judge noted the increasing prevalence of such offences as Liu Xitang’s case was heard in court on July 30.

The Chinese national, 35, was sentenced to 10 months’ jail after pleading guilty to one charge of theft.

Handing down the sentence, District Judge Eddy Tham said: “A strong message needs to be sent out to deter any like-minded persons from carrying out such offences.”

The court heard that Liu committed the crime on June 2 while onboard Scoot flight TR469 from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore.

His co-accused was fellow Chinese national Wang Wei, 41, who has also been charged. Wang’s case is still before the courts.

Wang was aware that Liu would commit theft on flights. In particular, Liu would get the details of other passengers’ credits cards and use the stolen information to make transactions.

In their conversations, they used the codeword “biscuit” to refer to credit cards.

The duo entered Malaysia from China on May 31. They planned to leave Malaysia on June 2 via the flight to Singapore, then transit to Hong Kong and part ways.

After boarding the plane, the victim, a 39-year-old Malaysian, placed her bag containing her valuables in the overhead compartment above her seat.

Before take-off, Liu reached into that overhead compartment and stole two debit cards and $169 in cash from the victim’s bag.

He then placed the items into a drawstring bag, which he got as a ScootPlus passenger, and passed the bag to Wang.

Liu also messaged an unknown person on WeChat that he had found a “biscuit” and coordinated with this person about when to use the cards.

Two other passengers witnessed Liu’s actions. A flight stewardess also noticed Liu passing the drawstring bag to Wang before take-off and instructed him to return to his seat.

When the flight landed, the two passengers saw the victim retrieve her bag from the overhead compartment and they realised it belonged to her and not Liu.

They decided to find and inform the victim to check her belongings. After the woman checked inside her bag and saw that cards and cash were missing, she filed a police report.

The police subsequently traced and arrested Liu and Wang at Changi Airport.

Wang returned the cash, and the victim’s debit cards were found in a dustbin near the immigration checkpoint. Liu admitted he had thrown them away.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Gladys Lim said there was evidence to suggest the pair were working with a larger group of criminals, such as the unknown third party Liu spoke to on WeChat.

In mitigation, Liu said through an interpreter that he knew what he did was “a very bad thing”.

“I should not have done it, Your Honour, and I’ve realised my mistake,” said Liu, adding that he hoped to return home soon to settle his father’s funeral matters.

Liu’s case comes amid a spike in cabin theft cases in Asia, which has been blamed on members of organised crime groups who catch short-transit flights to steal small items from passengers.

Between January and May, three people were charged in Singapore for theft onboard an aircraft. Only one person was charged in the same period in 2024.

Assistant Commissioner M. Malathi, commander of the Airport Police Division, told The Straits Times in June that passengers should always keep their valuables on them, remain vigilant and make timely reports for their officers to quickly trace the suspects.

SINGAPORE – A traveller was on board a Scoot flight when he retrieved another passenger’s bag from an overhead compartment while the man was away from his seat, took out a wallet and stole its contents – $200 and RM100 (S$30) in cash as well as a credit card.

After that, Zhang Kun placed the wallet back into the bag and returned it to the overhead compartment.

A nearby passenger who saw what Zhang had done alerted the victim after the plane landed, and the thief was arrested.

On May 28, Zhang, a 51-year-old Chinese national, who was in remand, was sentenced to 10 months’ jail after he pleaded guilty to a theft charge. He has made full restitution.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Eugene Phua told the court that Zhang and the 35-year-old Singaporean victim had boarded the Singapore-bound flight in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at around 11pm on March 16.

During the journey, the victim and his fiancee left their seats to meet his friend and the friend’s wife for a birthday celebration at the back of the plane.

Seeing that the couple had left their seats, Zhang walked to an overhead compartment near the victim’s seat and committed the offence.

After the plane landed at Changi Airport about an hour later, Mr K. Visvanathan, a 59-year-old Singaporean, approached the victim to tell him about the theft.

The victim checked his belongings and found his cash and credit card missing.

Mr Visvanathan then pointed at Zhang, and the victim confronted the thief before blocking his credit card. A check later revealed that no one had used it for unauthorised transactions.

The victim’s fiancee contacted the police at around 12.15am on March 17. Officers arrived at the scene soon after but could not find the loot in Zhang’s possession.

Court documents did not disclose what he did with them, but he was observed making several trips to a toilet before the officers’ arrival.

Investigations revealed that Zhang had accomplices who were also on board the flight and were transiting in Singapore before making their way to Hong Kong.

Initially, Zhang did not admit to taking the credit card and cash.

He also did not reveal to the police what he had done with the stolen items.

The police said in a statement on May 28 that Mr Visvanathan received a Public Spiritedness Award on March 25 for his contribution that led to Zhang’s arrest.

“His timely information was instrumental in enabling our officers to take swift action to identify and arrest the accused,” said Commander of the Airport Police Division, Assistant Commissioner M. Malathi.

“Such vigilance goes a long way in the swift detection and substantiation of such crimes, which are often challenging to uncover due to their transient nature... We hope that his action will serve to inspire others to keep air travel safe for all travellers.”

For theft, an offender can be jailed for up to three years and fined.

PAP regime is globalist and shamelessly xenophilic, this is to be expected.

Under the right conditions, foreigners can get away with even the more serious crimes, including murder.

Chinese national jailed for stealing from passenger on Scoot flight from Jeju to S’pore

Zhang Youqi, 30, was caught when he attempted to return the bag to the overhead compartment he took it from.

Zhang Youqi, 30, searched a woman's bag on board a flight and took over $1,000 from it.

Feb 25, 2025

SINGAPORE – A Chinese national decided to search a woman’s bag for valuables after he spotted her with a branded haversack on a flight from South Korea to Singapore in early February.

He found a chance to do so before the plane landed, and he took out US$885 ($1,180) and hid it.

Zhang Youqi, 30, was caught when he attempted to return the bag to the overhead compartment he took it from.

On Feb 25, Zhang was sentenced to eight months’ jail after pleading guilty to committing theft against another passenger while on board an aircraft.

District Judge Koo Zhi Xuan said that while the number of thefts on board Singapore-controlled aircraft may not yet be as concerning as other countries in the region, a heavy sentence is needed to send the right message.

“The court has to impose a sufficiently severe sentence to deter not only individual travellers who succumb to a moment of greed, but also criminal syndicates from targeting Singapore-controlled aircraft,” he said.

The prosecution said Zhang, who was employed as a tour guide at the time, boarded a Scoot flight from Jeju to Singapore on Feb 4.

Zhang and the woman were allocated seats on the same row, but he had moved to sit at a different row as there were empty seats on the plane.

During the flight, Zhang spotted the woman reaching for her brown Gucci bag, as she had purchased food on the plane and needed her credit card.

Court documents do not say how Zhang managed to take the bag without the woman noticing.

But he admitted to removing the bag and bringing it back to where he was sitting. He then searched the contents and removed US$885, before hiding the money in the overhead compartment of another row.

He then attempted to return the bag to the overhead compartment, but she spotted him, and Zhang lied that he was looking for his own bag.

Zhang then proceeded to open a few other overhead compartments, pretending to look for his own luggage, but was confronted by the woman after she realised money was missing from her bag.

He denied taking the money, even after two other passengers said they saw him with the woman’s bag.

The money, which was stashed in another row, was discovered by the cabin crew upon the plane’s arrival in Singapore.

He later admitted that he had stolen the money to pay off debts he had incurred in China. Zhang was arrested on the same day.

Those found guilty of theft can be jailed for up to three years, fined, or both.

2 women caught stealing at Changi Airport while in transit; one jailed, the other fined $700

One of the two travellers, Garg Prasha, was given a fine of $700 after pleading guilty to one count of theft.

One of the two travellers, Garg Prasha, was fined $700 after pleading guilty to one count of theft.

Jun 16, 2025

SINGAPORE – Two travellers flew into Singapore from Kolkata, India, on June 2 and stayed in transit at Changi Airport, before their flight to Bali.

While in transit, the pair stole from shops at the airport but were quickly caught by the authorities.

Garg Prasha, 30, entered the Charles & Keith store at Terminal 2 after arriving from India.

While browsing in the shop at around 7am, she spotted a black haversack bag on display, took it and then placed it into the luggage trolley she was pushing. She then left the shop without paying.

An employee noticed what had happened, and a police report was made.

Garg was found and arrested shortly after with the haversack, worth more than $80, recovered in its original condition.

On June 16, she was given a fine of $700 after pleading guilty to one count of theft.

Deputy Principal District Judge Luke Tan said Garg had committed the offence less than an hour after arriving in Singapore.

“The only saving grace was that the bag was recovered, but she has been effectively caught red-handed here,” said the judge.

Meanwhile, Goenka Simran, 29, was sentenced on June 16 to eight days’ jail after she pleaded guilty to one count of theft in dwelling. Another similar charge was taken into consideration during her sentencing.

Goenka had also flown into Singapore on June 2 and was waiting in transit for her connecting flight to Bali at Terminal 3.

The court heard that she entered the Furla store at 1.40pm and saw a yellow purse on display. She took the purse, worth more than $300, and placed it on the luggage trolley she was pushing, before leaving the store without making payment.

She also admitted to stealing a bottle of perfume at a cosmetics store at Terminal 2 valued at more than $200.

“She was supposed to be in Singapore for only 10 hours, but she decided to help herself to the goods worth more than $500 in total during that time,” said the judge.

“She would have gotten away if not for the quick actions of the authorities and staff, and once she gets away, it would be impossible to recover the items.”

The prosecution added that while Garg and Goenka knew each other, they did not act as part of a syndicate.

Those who commit theft can be jailed for up to three years, fined, or both. The offence of theft in dwelling carries a jail term of up to seven years and a fine.

Woman who left S’pore in 2023 after stealing perfume at Changi Airport fined $750

Australian Raj Varsha stole a bottle of Chanel perfume worth nearly $250 at the airport’s Terminal 1 departure transit area.

Australian Raj Varsha stole a bottle of Chanel perfume worth nearly $250 at the airport’s Terminal 1 departure transit area in March 2023.

Apr 11, 2025

SINGAPORE – A woman who stole a bottle of perfume from a Changi Airport store two years ago was fined $750 on April 11 after she pleaded guilty to a theft charge.

Australian Raj Varsha, 35, who stole a bottle of Chanel perfume worth nearly $250 from a store at the airport’s Terminal 1 departure transit area on March 22, 2023, was detained when she returned here on March 31, 2025.

Officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority then referred the matter to the police.

State Prosecuting Officer (SPO) Zakir Hussain told the court that on the day of the theft, Raj had arrived at Changi Airport with her family after a flight from Australia shortly before 3am.

At around 4.10am, she entered The Shilla Duty Free store at the airport’s Terminal 1 departure transit area, took a bottle of Chanel perfume and concealed it in her bag.

A security officer later spotted the missing bottle and alerted the store’s employees.

SPO Zakir said: “The accused, upon realising that the theft had been discovered, immediately left the Shilla store without paying for the said bottle of perfume. At 9.10am, she departed to Thailand with her family.”

One of the store’s supervisors viewed footage from CCTV cameras and alerted the Airport Police Division.

The court heard that Raj was detained when she returned to Singapore two years later on a flight from India on March 31.

She then admitted to the offence, claiming that she had given the stolen bottle of perfume to her mother as a gift.

Raj, who was not represented by a lawyer, wept as she stood before District Judge A. Sangeetha on April 11.

She tearfully told the judge: “I take full responsibility for what I have done and I’m very sorry. I’ve never had any issues with the law before... I wasn’t thinking straight (and) was not in the right frame of mind.”

She has since made a full restitution to the store.

Offenders convicted of theft can be jailed for up to three years and fined.
