SINGAPORE — Mr Jeremy Cheok has just two requirements for anyone willing to work in the restaurant he founded: Two hands and two legs. Age, he said, is not a factor.
Yet, he continues to find it tough to hire workers, with even "a couple of old people” who walk by to enquire about job vacancies not showing up on the day they were supposed to be interviewed, he added. “They just ghosted us.”
- Several F&B operators have tried raising salaries and offering better working conditions to tackle the ongoing manpower crunch
- These are still not helping and they find it hard to recruit workers
- Existing workers are being poached by competitors, while part-timers are looking elsewhere for easier jobs
- The president of the Singapore Nightlife Business Association said the authorities need to talk to the trade associations to solve this problem
- The Restaurant Association of Singapore is appealing to MOM to relook its foreign manpower policies
