[h=2]The elites’ sense of entitlement[/h]

I read the letter “’Elitism’ can be good for society” (link)
recently published in the Straits Times forum, and can’t help but feel elitism
is going to continue dominating Singapore society for the foreseeable future. Is
this something Singaporeans should be concerned about? After all, our very own
PAP government which 60% supports, thrives on elitism.
This young writer, only graduated from Raffles Institution last year, could
well be the PAP candidate of tomorrow. He does hail from the very institution
PAP draws many of its candidates from.
Even as PAP tries to paint a more “heartlander” picture of itself by
introducing its latest batch of candidates in a heartland coffeeshop, the
writer’s attitude shows the elites will always see themselves as more
intelligent, more talented, therefore more deserving than the average
hardworking Singaporeans to the wealth of Singapore, and only dishing out drips
and drabs to Singaporeans as they deem fit. Remember Vivian Balakrishnan’s
comment made in an exchange with MP Dr Lily Neo, on whether the government could
give more money to the poor so that they could afford three meals a day?
He had said: ‘How much do you want? Do you want three meals in a hawker
centre, food court or restaurant?’
More deserving of prizes
In an interview, Chong Kee Hiong, a PAP newbie, mentioned how upset he was,
and still is, that although he scored the highest marks for Mathematics and
Chinese in his Primary 5 cohort, his teacher gave the Math prize to another
pupil who had finished half a mark behind, telling him he had won too many
prizes. He certainly believes he deserves that one more prize, and doesn’t
believe in sharing the good things.
“If we spent 387 million dollars, will we get value from that expenditure? In
my mind, the answer … is yes,” – Vivian Balakrishnan, the Minister who overspent
the YOG budget by millions, never mind accountability.
“…if an alternative government is voted in), my asset values
will disappear, my apartments will be worth a fraction of what
they were, my ministers’ jobs will be in peril, their security
will be at risk and their women will become maids in other people’s countries,
foreign workers. I cannot have that!” – Lee Kuan Yew, when defending the million
dollar salary-hikes for his ministers”.
Our current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong even believes the million-dollars
drawing PAP deserves your leniency, “We’re sorry we didn’t get it (housing
shortage, transport congestion, Mas Selamat escape, Orchard Road flooding)
exactly right, but I hope you will understand and bear with
us…”
More deserving to rule over us, the lesser humans
“We decide what is right. Never mind what the people think.” – Lee Kuan
Yew.
“If you can’t force or are unwilling to force your people to follow you, with
or without threats, you are not a leader.” – Lee Kuan Yew.
“Mine is a very matter-of-fact approach to the problem. If you can select a
population and they’re educated and they’re properly brought up, then you don’t
have to use too much of the stick because they would already have been trained.
It’s like with dogs. You train it in a proper way from small. It will know that
it’s got to leave, go outside to pee and to defecate. No, we are not that kind
of society. We had to train adult dogs who even today deliberately urinate in
the lifts.” – Lee Kuan Yew.
Not only are we lower class than them, we are dogs to Singapore’s “founding
father”.
“…if I can get another 10 billionaires to move to Singapore and set up their
base here… I think Singapore will be better off because they will bring
business, they will bring opportunities” – Lee Hsien Loong.
“It would be stupid for any Singapore agency or NTU to advocate the learning
of dialects, which must be at the expense of English and Mandarin…That was the
reason the Government stopped all dialect programmes on radio and television
after 1979” – Chee Hong Tat, one of the latest PAP candidate for the Bishan-Toa
Payoh GRC.
Is it an illusion that PAP and their elites think they are more equal than
the rest of us, that they are more deserving of the good things in life?
A renowned executive coach, Marshall Goldsmith, had this to say about these
men, “They (top civil servants) get paid more, they’re highly educated, and they
have bigger egos, bigger than any government employees I’ve met anywhere else in
the world… they consider themselves superior to almost any government employee
in the world.”
This group is counterproductive to the progress of our young nation. They
pull their ideas out of the same box yet all the time thinking they know best
and deserve only the best, they are incapable of sharing, from wealth creation
opportunities to governance to even having more room to make mistakes without
accountability. This lack of diversity means Singapore has become a one-trick
pony in an ever-changing world. Even today, they continue to think they deserve
to use taxpayers money to buy votes for themselves!
While PAP continues to flog the dead horse a.k.a LKY in the hope of winning
the upcoming election, Singaporeans should remember that these men of the same
mould believe in their superiority and our stupidity. Our revered “founding
father”, Singapore’s first prime minister, said aloud,
That was the year the British decided to get out and sell everything. So I
immediately held an election. I knew the people will be dead scared. And I won
my bet big-time. The gullible fools!
and his kah-kias who came after him still calls us dafts!
Let me leave the young writer from Raffles Institution (and PAP) with this
picture that shows what Singapore society could look like without elitists’
sense of entitlement.
