An airport policeman has been convicted of molesting a tourist at the airport.
The victim, a 29-year-old Indonesian woman, was a former maid in Singapore and now works as a sales assistant in Indonesia.
She had worked in Singapore for six years previously and had returned to Singapore on 13 August last year as a tourist hoping to visit her former employer.
She was however, detained at the Changi Airport budget terminal and deported back to Indonesia.
It is unclear why she was deported.
While at the airport, she was escorted by a 30-year-old airport policeman to the holding area in airport terminal 2.
At a deserted corridor in the airport, the policeman suddently pulled her aside to search her body.
The man ordered that she raise her arms, before reaching into her clothes with his right hand to grope her breasts.
He then made her turn around and face a wall, before putting his left hand into her pants to grope her buttocks and private parts.
The man even asked her for her phone number but the upset woman rejected him and quietly returned to Indonesia.
The incident came to light when her former employer made a call to her the next day to find out why she did not show up at the airport.
The woman's former employer had gone to the airport to pick her up and had waited in vain.
The woman, crying, described to her former employer what happened.
Her former employer decided to help her lodge a police report.
The Indonesian woman returned to Singapore the following month in September to testify in court.
The policeman said in his defence that the Indonesian woman had tried to seduce him while he was escorting her to the holding area.
According to him, the woman had smiled at him and even hugged him.
When he rejected her advances, she had allegedly thrown some kind of white powder at him while chanting beneath her breath.
The policeman said that this had caused him to feel lightheaded.
Suspecting that the woman was trying to attack him, he decided to do a body search on her.
The judge however, found his testimony inconsistent and did not give credit to his story.
The man has been convicted of molest and sentenced to 12 months' jail and 3 strokes of the cane.
He is appealing against the sentence.
Meanwhile, the prosecution is also appealing against the sentence as it believes that the sentence is too light.
