PRC_on_strike1-300x217.jpg
Yesterday was another milestone in Singapore’s colourful history. As a result of PAP’s authoritarian rule, many of us have never seen a strike before. Yes, I have to admit, I am 40 years old and I have never seen a strike. Not only that, it was only when I reached 29 years old did I have my first chance to vote! Prior to that, there were two walkovers because of this thing call GRC. Wait, I am digressing.

Thanks to these 102 heroes, which I sincerely hope that ALL Chinese newspapers in Beijing or other major Chinese cities will report, it will finally be made known how poor a host has Singapore been to these foreign workers. Not only do they have to leave thousands of miles away from their homes, their wives and their children, they have to live in horrible conditions and receive a second class treatment even among foreign workers!
Yes, you have heard it, even among foreign workers, there is a class difference!! Malaysians got higher increment and even a bonus, while Chinese workers got a far worse deal! Why? Are Chinese workers handicapped? Are Chinese workers working less hours? Mind you these Chinese workers have no qualms about getting a poorer deal compared to local Singaporeans. This is a fact that they understand and have already accepted. But why are Malaysian foreign workers given more?!

I have always said this and I will say it again, PAP’s government is ALL but a bunch of hypocrites!! They say one thing and they practice another. For instance, on the one hand they ask you to have more children, preferably three or more. On the other hand, they build smaller flats with maximum of 3 bedrooms. Assuming that me and my wife stays in one room, how are you going to allocate two rooms between three children?! Ask one of them to live in the living room OR better yet sleep along the corridor?!

Then of course, there is the recent debate to allow more workers to be roped into the Employment Act so that they are so-called better protected against the exploits of employers. Hello, Minister of Manpower, have you recently visited the MOM website? It states that minimum number of days for leave start at SEVEN!! This is the most glaring exploit, and you don’t want to change this first?

What does this SEVEN days actually mean? Most foreign workers are already working on 6-day weeks. Seven days of leave plus all the Sundays and Public Holidays effectively mean they would have worked 296 days for this year. This compared to most Singaporeans who work 5-day week and enjoy at least 14 days of leave, they would have worked only 244 days. The difference here is a whopping 52 days, which is around 1.5 months difference!! And you tell me that Singapore businesses cannot find Singaporeans to fill job vacancies!! Who the hell will ever want to work 296 days a year?!

On top of the long working hours with few days of rest in between, there is also the problem of horrible living conditions. Some time back, I saw The New Paper reporting – more than 200 Indians cramped into a hostel meant to take in less than 80 people! There were only a few toilets for these 200 men to share!! Shit and rubbish were all over the place, with mosquitoes and houseflies everywhere!! What if Cholera or Dengue Fever had broken out? Yet, when these unscrupulous landlords were prosecuted, most escape with a slap on the wrist!! If you ask me, these inhumane SOBs should be jailed for at least 3 years and fined a million dollars!!

Because of these insufficient and puny punishment given out by the courts, more people have been dreaming to become landlords. I recently heard someone quoting $500 to rent out the balcony of her 3-room flat in Ang Mo Kio. WTF?! $500 to rent a space that is big enough for a single bed with one small drawer!! The PAP calls this enterprising . . I call this highway robbery!!

Some ask why do I call it a Lee empire when Singapore is a democratic society? How can we be a democratic society when the leader of the largest communist state says that he want to model his country after us?! Surely PAP has done something incredible that even a proud communist of the world’s most populous nation want to copy you!!

I am glad and even thrilled that these foreign workers aka “modern-day SLAVES” finally revolted! It saddens me that we don’t dare to even exercise our basic right to react to adversities. We lose our jobs to foreigners, we don’t dare to protest. Our bosses become bastards by lowering wages, yet we don’t dare to strike. That’s why we earned ourselves the most emotionless people award. I say PAP gave us this award, so either we embrace it or we kick PAP out of Singapore once and for all!

This empire that progresses on the back of so-many slaves dares to say that sometimes doing the right thing is more important than becoming a populist government. This is exactly what a communist will say! The only scenario when a government can do the “right” thing and yet not be popular is when its people are all morons. PM Lee, are you saying we are all morons? Right now, I can only identify 60 percent of the morons, but that number is coming down thick and fast!!

Now, the government’s so-called doing “right things” are based on the thoughts of 93 people. These 93 people reside in Parliament House like what Ming or Qing Emperor used to live in the Forbidden City. You the PAP, just like previous Emperors decide what is right and anybody who does not follow is condemned as WRONG? Is building a casino “right” thing? As if one casino was not enough, you built two! Is overspending YOG budget by more than $300 million a “right” thing then?

We, the people, may not have received the BEST education in elite universities like Harvard or MIT, but we are certainly not MORONS!! You don’t need a rocket scientist to explain to us that what PAP has done all this while is not right at all!! And if you are not right and you are not popular, what happens to people like you then? And most important of all, you have brought shame to the whole of Singapore with all your nasty deeds!!
But no worries, Judgment Day is here soon!

We just have to be patient. . .

[h=2]SMRT bus drivers publish their grievances online before they go on strike[/h]

It has been reported by netizens that the SMRT PRC bus drivers had actually published their grievances online earlier, late yesterday night (25 Nov) at about 11pm before they went on strike this morning (26 Nov). That is, they “refused to start work” this morning.

The title of the posting uses a provocative heading, “PRC bus drivers have awakened”. It was supposed to be originally posted on Baidu website but was deleted. It was then posted on a popular PRC website in Singapore, Sgchinese:

http://bbs.sgchinese.net/thread-6091945-1-1.html

st21.jpg
Translation (provided by http://repolitlebijou.blogspot.sg):

SMRT has a total of about 400 Bus Drivers coming from China which is about 1/3 of their total staff strength for Bus Drivers.

For many years, excluding the 13th month bonus which you are only entitled to after working for a min. of 12 months, China Staff salary have been a lot lower than staff from other countries. The last increment of $50 SGD was still considered reasonable but at the same time, the company also increased the workload of the bus drivers by multiple fold. Everyday, the buses have to be inspected in perfect condition and it seems that instead of a pay increment, they are using the extra $50 as an excuse to increase workload that is worth a lot more than the $50 SGD. This is exactly like the behaviour of a boss for a small store and not of a big company/organization.

Although, there is an increment of Salary beginning from Nov 23rd to make up for the extension of official working days from 5 to 6 working days but however, the China staffs are once again excluded from this increment and this extension is “forced” on them with no advance notification or additional information provided. Why are only China Staffs excluded from this increment? The earlier promises that were made to the China Staffs have been forgotten and we are now only seen as Staff from China but not a part of SMRT. Even if SMRT have forgotten the promises made but there is still the contract we signed, why is this extension of an additional working day enforced mid-way into our contract? We are also a part of SMRT staff who are servicing the Singapore public every day.

Furthermore, we are all grouped into a room with 10 over people and are not living together with people who are working the same morning/night working shifts, hence we are always not able to have a good rest with people always going in and out of the room. Without proper rest, this will not only affect our health but also public safety.

You have high expectations of us with ‘0′ accidents and to be the provider of excellent service but with such living conditions and salary, such expectations are only a fairy tale and not realistic at all!

I refer to the article “HK commission to tackle poverty” (Straits Times, Nov 10).
Singapore’s social welfare spending $2.13b
According to the Revenue and Expenditure Estimates for the Financial Year 2012/2013, the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports’ (MCYS) Total Expenditure is $2.13 billion (Estimated FY2012).
Hong Kong’s social welfare spending $6.87b
In contrast, according to Hong Kong: The Facts http://www.gov.hk/en/about/abouthk/factsheets/docs/social_welfare.pdf, in 2012/13, the total estimated expenditure of Hong Kong’s Social Welfare Department (SWD) is HK$43.5 billion (S$6.87 billion).
Hong Kong spends 76% more per capita?
On a spending per capita basis, Hong Kong’s is $981 against Singapore’s $558.
As Hong Kong’s resident population is about 7 million, against Singapore’s resident population of 3.82 million, Hong Kong is spending relatively more than Singapore, at about 76 per cent more.
Hong Kong has minimum wage
In May last year, Hong Kong instituted a minimum wage of HK$28 ($4.42), which is set to increase to HK$30 ($4.74).
In Singapore, calls for a minimum wage have been rejected.
Universal social welfare system
Unlike Singapore which essentially does not have a universal social welfare system, Hong Kong has a Comprehensive Social Security Assistance Scheme (CSSA) which provides cash assistance to bring the income of needy households up to a prescribed level to meet basic livelihood needs.
Pension for elderly and disabled?
Unlike Singapore which has no national pension or disability scheme funded by the Government, Hong Kong has the “Social Security Allowance Scheme which comprises Old Age Allowance and Disability Allowance. It provides a flat-rate allowance to meet the special needs of the elderly and the severely disabled. Applicants for Old Age Allowance aged 65-69 are subject to a means test while those aged 70 and above are eligible regardless of their means. Disability Allowance is for those who suffer a disability broadly equivalent to a total loss of earning capacity”.
Independent appeals body
In addition, Hong Kong has an “Independent Social Security Appeal Board, comprising non-government members, which provides a means of redress for any person not satisfied with the decision of the SWD in respect of eligibility and payment of social security benefits”.
Free education
Hong Kong has 12 years of free and compulsory education for all school-aged children.http://www.hkcss.org.hk/index_e.asp
Universal healthcare?
Hong Kong has a universal public healthcare system which is heavily subsidised. It’s public healthcare spending as a percentage of GDP, at about 3 per cent, is more than Singapore’s 1.6 per cent.
Compassion and emphathy?
The article “PM: Nation’s success must be measured by values too” (Straits Times, Nov 10) said, “Success is not just about economic growth but growth in values such as compassion and empathy”.
So, in the spirit of the values of compassion and empathy, perhaps we could try to spend more and have a universal social welfare and healthcare system like Hong Kong.
