They also claimed they were linked to a legitimate investment company based in Hong Kong.

If you know what kind of country China really is and what condition Hong Kong is in after 1997 and then after 2019, that would be an instant red flag.

The scammers would continue to build rapport with the victims to convince them to invest in the “investment products”. Victims would then be invited to create a trading account by downloading applications (e.g., FPTUP, FPTEX, NOVIQ, FPCAP, SDXA, SJ NEXUS, WHG ROUP, GINKO PLUS) from Apple App Store or Google Play Store. These were shell investment applications that promoted fraudulent investment products such as fake cryptocurrency, forex, and stock-trading products. The victims’ purported trades shown in these applications were fake and the “profits” did not exist.

Other than the preinstalled (Google or Apple, maybe Samsung) apps that come with a new phone, you really do not need more than ten apps for your life.

Only install the bare essentials. TikTok is not one of them.

And don't play mobile games. They are nothing more than ad delivery platforms and operate on casino-gambling psychology to get you to pay for microtransactions. It's the shitty state of the gaming industry now. Waste of storage space and battery life.
