Serial condo thief nabbed

A SERIAL condominium housebreaker was nabbed after he went on a month-long stealing spree aimed at homes in the Bukit Timah area. The 29-year-old, who is believed to be self-employed and working in sales, was nabbed on Tuesday afternoon at his home at Pasir Ris Street 12. There, the police seized items that totalled about $8,000. Items that were found included laptops, handbags and cameras.

Back in September, a spike in break-ins were reported at condominiums and apartments in areas like Bukit Timah, Orange Grove Road, Stevens Road and Holland Road. Police began conducting extensive investigations, which included the viewing of CCTV footage. Later, they discovered that the man's modus operandi was that he would scale the fences, and target mostly the ground-level units.

He would observe the homes to see which windows and gates were left unlocked, before sneaking in and taking things.
He would strike only in the early hours of the morning. He is believed to be responsible for at least eight break-ins. If found guilty of housebreaking and theft by night, he could be jailed 14 years. Police would like to remind house occupants to secure all doors and windows before going to sleep or when leaving home. Occupants should also avoid keeping large sums of money or valuables at home.
